I would only use that to kill myself. The amount of damage I could do to my hand (even just callouses as an MtF) or wrist by a simple operating error for self-defense is too much to risk. Is a Beretta PX4 Storm subcompact in 9mm a good choice? I like the P90 for its look, but I can only buy a PS90 and then get permission from the ATF to shortbarrel it. I hear the ammo is expensive though.

I want a really small concealed carry weapon with a pretty good capacity. That's why the PX4 subcompact is appealing to me. Though my state is de jure "may issue" for permits, it's de facto "shall not issue" unless you have political connections or are a current or former cop, so perhaps there's no point. You typically wouldn't want something like an ar-15 in closed quarters for defense w/o lots of training b/c it can penetrate walls (killing ppl you are trying to protect). But for some, "home" defense might be out in the country over lots of land. If I was on a ranch right at the Mexican border, I would probably be interested in something like an that.
IMO, I think Joe Biden had it right when he flubbed out that line about a shotgun for home defense. To me shotguns are a whole lot easier to handle without lots of range time than a handgun but then I've used shotguns since I was little kid.

The vital thing for home defense if you be used to and familiar with the gun so as to not be fumbling for the controls or when loading it or aiming in the dark. This means range time and more range time, regardless of what you choose.
Something fairly modern like an AR-15 is fairly light, compact, easy to handle, cheap enough to get, cheap to feed and will reliably fuck someone up-all of which are good in home defense.

The PX4 in general is fine, but I seriously recommend you get a feel for a regular compact and a full size one before you commit to a subcompact, they're not as easy to handle for a newbie.
A PS90 wouldn't be terrible, but the thing is expensive, it's main boon is greatly hampered by NFA laws (barrel length, no full-auto) as well as a lack of good ammo, most of what you'll find is watered down target loads.
I wouldn't recommend one unless you're very recoil shy and it's a weapon you've already tried out a bunch of times to make sure it's for you.
If you are recoil shy, an AR-15 really is very gentle to shoot.

99.9% of all weapons in the US that look like they shoot full auto don't shoot full-auto, they shoot semi-auto, like a pistol, one trigger-pull, one bullet. Many military weapons are sold in semi-auto only variants in civilian markets, or clones of them.
They're highly regarded for defense because a rifle is easier to shoot than a pistol, is more accurate than a pistol and a shotgun, while less likely to over penetrate (if we're talking 5.56mm and 5.45mm, etc)

Firstly the "M16"s and "AK"s that you see in stores and gun shows are semi-automatic. It takes Federal Licencing and a gorrilion dollars for most people to get the fully automatic ones.
Second the follow up shots and capacity means you don't have to worry about changing magazines if there are more than one attackers. It's also a plus because rifle rounds will drop the attackers even if they are hooked with PCP.

that .500 s &W is a stupid recommendation , overly powerful hard to handle recoil and the leathality improvement over something like the .44 magnum isn't worth it hell I would argue there is no reason in a hand gun to go over the power of a 357 magnum as one hit should easily drop a person and a follow up shot should kill them, assuming you can aim. My recommendation would be either a .38 special or 9mm as they are cheap and easy to use and train with. Not only that but minimum recoil will allow quick follow on shots. As for rifles ar 15 is a platform with many different calibers ranging from .22 lr all the way to .50 Beowulf, I would recommend an ar 15 in either .223, 5.56 nato , or 7.62x39. any other weapons such as 12 gauge shot guns or .410 are also good, really anything that gives you good capacity and minimum recoil while generating over 500 foot pounds of energy in a rifle and over 300 foot pounds of energy in a hand gun

For Glock, they have a decent set of compact and subcompact pistols in various calibers, there are also the the Springfield Armory XD-S 3.3, the Beretta Nano, Smith and Wesson M&P Shield 9, the Walther PPS, the Sig Sauer P938, the Ruger LC9 and the Boberg XR9-S for 9mm compact options.

I'd go with a compact or sub-compact double-stack over a tiny 9. A lot of ladies I've shot with really, really didn't like my smaller automatics (P938, Glock 43 single stack). Because they are lighter and have a smaller grip they tend to be less comfortable to shoot. This leads to bad shooting habits, and being 'afraid' of the gun, which is not a good thing if they need to defend themselves with it.
I've also noticed that despite the sayings of the Fudds out there, ladies tend to like .45 ACP. Most loadings have less perceived recoil (someone explained this to me once about them using slower burning powers / different impulse profile or some such).

That really depends, Kel-Tec churns out a lot of pocket pistols, way more than their more interesting stuff, because they sell.
They had this weird packaging deal with retailers IIRC, that they'd sell them some Sub2ks and RFBs and KSG if they bought something like 40 of their small pistols or a bunch of their cheap .223 rifles
