Put him on the defensive. If you can't think of good incisive questions to ask him during the date, just pick any random thing he does, or some life decision he made in the past, and ask him what his goal was when he decided to do that. If he can give a clear answer, reply, "interesting..." That's usually enough to make people second-guess themselves. Then decide what your objective is as the date is wrapping up and pursue it with brutal efficiency.

Tell him at the beginning of the date that your a bit socially awkward and might make a fool of yourself. Even if it isn't true he will probably be more forgiving any derpiness,
