It costs money, and as a fiscal conservative, I figured you might actually be a bit more understanding of the reality. Having mandatory military service costs money, the only way to realistically pay for it is with high taxes. You can't have your cake and eat it too, you have to ask what matters more: freedom of the individual, or having a standing army of conscripts.
I feel like volunteers are better suited to the job than conscripts are. How many people here do you think would be well cut out for mandatory military service? If it's a matter of survival skills and combat training, people can get those elsewhere, or through the military as a volunteer. In times of actual warfare, emergency conscription fills the gap, is just as effective, and costs far, FAR less.
