Gay is not new, the terminology simply is, being gay has always existed there just hasn't always been a term for it. Schizophrenia has always existed and yet it was not called schizophrenia. Homosexual figures before homosexuality was really a thing don't really matter much. Everyone used to do homosexual acts even though you couldn't identify as homosexual(something that still happens for example in Saudi Arabia).
Personally I think Oscar Wilde, Harvey Milk, Bayard Rustin and Alan Turing are the ones every gay should read about.

As far as Im aware, Rome didn't have a "homosexuality." Men were expected to sleep with women and boys or other effeminate men. It was about masculinity and not a sexual orientation
Alexander Hamilton is practically confirmed bi, not sure whether or not it's officially proven. Most of the ancient Greek city states had some form of homosexual acts either expected or encouraged as part of growing up to full manhood.
