People who make it far enough for surgery without being murdered or committing suicide are probably stable enough to continue afterwards.
What I am saying is correlation is not causation. Just because rates go down, it probably isn't because of corrective surgery, but rather an issue of sampling.

The study outright claims that it can't determine before/after rates for SRS because that would be unethical. Moreover, suicide (attempt) rates drop precipitously over the course of the study, winding up more or less identical to the general populace starting with patients that received SRS after 1989. Conveniently, the only thing that the study CAN safely conclude is included in their conclusion: that better post-surgery counseling and aftercare is essential.
