Don't know how I've never heard of this, apparently the US military was looking at purchasing rifle rated groin protection and even awarded a company a contract for doing so back in 2012. They call them GAPI plates. Does anyone know if this went anywhere? Medium version supposedly would weight ~1.7 lbs.

Russians have a pocket for plates in their 6b43 vest, the groin plates are the same as the side ones.

I've known about the Russian 6b43 for a while now, also has a lower back plate. Also the German groin plates that are almost the size of the chest plate. I'm just surprised that it took me until now to hear about the US military trying it.

Damn, I figured more people on /k/ would be interested in this. Depending on the coverage of the plates it could be a game changer for short range combat as aiming for the groin to avoid the chest plates would no longer be an option.

I got issued a dick plate. Every unit I was with got issued dick plates. Even in 2009 in the national guard.

I don't get it. Is the goal or more and more armor to make it get to the point that a soldier can run or even move? When is enough enough?

I wouldn't. Getting shot in the femoral would be a death sentence, but getting shot in the groin is the new gutshot. Not much they can do for you out in the field. Only way to stop the bleeding is to stuff it all full of gauz and quickclot, which in many cases ends up making it worse.

Pic is from ~2005-6 when the Marines were starting evaluations for the IAR. Ultimax Mk 4 was one of the entrees and Delta Force got a hold of some of them
