The thing is, 90% of males back then up 15 had hearing damage.
It was just taboo to talk about.
Even Hitler had severe hearing damage, from world war 1, the dozens of speeches in front of hundred thousands cheering and of course the assassination attempt.
Nobody used hearing protection, not in battle and not in training, and neither at work.
You just had to live with it.

When i'm hunting I never have ear pro on.
Target shooting you won't see me without it anymore. I can't stand the EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE after the way I've treated my ears at the range.

I talked to a ball turret guy once. He said he didn't go deaf then, he went deaf when he got older. Grinned and pointed to his hearing aids. Same with a B-26 pilot i knew.
