How do we make a sword useful again?

the best armor against bad ideas...
Weapons will always need to be more powerful than the armour of the time. If some clever bugger makes armour that is bullet proof then a new weapon will be needed. If that weapon is a form of sword then it will again be relevent. However no matter how cool swords are, they were obsoleted by firearms and its entirely likely they will never be relevent again.

I love these threads! I'm in an armored combat league, and I'm partial to warbrands, proto greatswords, nice and maneuverable but with enough weight to really fuck up armored opponents. pic related
Coming from a guy who's practiced HEMA for 3 years:
A sword is always useful, but since everyone and their mother has a semiautomatic pistol in their pants, there isn't a reason why you should ever carry a sword over a gun. A knife or dagger, sure. But not a sword.
Unless there comes a time when gunpowder can't be easily made (read: Never), swords and melee weapons in general are mostly just dead weight. Or unless you lived in a country where the laws both banned all pistols AND allowed the carry of blades over 12 inches.

make them smaller, attach them to the end of guns and only use them for very niche, specific situations.

We get a gun... that fire SWORDS. Not just any old swords, swords that are like pocket knife swords, ya know like flip open like a knife but are swords, and yeah we have them on fire.
