Hey /k/, say a SHTF scenario happens, what do you think is the best overall birdshot round for hunting small game and birds?

I use No.4 birdshot because it cycles flawlessly in my Auto-5 on the heavy load setup.

So that way I don't have to switch the spring setup between bird and buck/slugs.

No.5 works decently well, but I trust No.4 more.
>>
>>30608713
You dont think no4 would ruin pigeons etc?
>>
Nah, they do the same or less because #4 has less shot per oz. You get bbs that carry energy farther penetrate deeper and are easier to pick out #4 all the way.
>>
>>30608743
Probably.

But I'd rather not carry a gorrilion different varieties of loads, especially in a SHTF situation.
>>
>>30608664
For small game post-SHTF: snares, bows, slingbows or slingshots: ammo should be used sparingly. If you have a bugout location then maybe a good idea to plant lots of berrybushes (attract birds etc as well as a s snack).
>>
Yep, in 12 ga 1oz. #4 at 1300+ fps is my go to load for most living things.
if im after tiny stuff like morning dove I'll use 3/4-7/8 oz #6 .
>>
So you guys think no4 will work for everything?
>>
>>30608909
Apart from shit like geese or turkeys, yeah, probably.
>>
>>30608909
Depends on your definition of "everything".

For me no 4 is strictly small-ish game
>>
Personally I prefer #6 shot so that is what I stock a lot of.
>>
>>30608664
Depends on the birds. If they're bigger (pheasants, huns, etc.) then No.5 or even No. 4 will work fine but if they're smaller (quail, doves, chukar, etc.) then No. 6 - No. 8 will be much more appropriate. But then again it's not like you have to choose; almost every automatic shotgun can be adjusted to cycle different rounds and most contemporary gas-operated shotguns will eat any-fucking-thing with no issues.

My SHTF shotgun is a 12ga Beretta AL 390 Silver Mallard; I can switch chokes in 30 seconds and it's light enough to carry and swing all day but has enough heft to shoulder and track well plus the ergos are exceptional and it has never - not once - malfunctioned on me in any way no matter what I put through it, including 2 3/4" trap loads and 3" magnums staggered in the same magazine just to see if I could get it to slip up. That might not be the right gun for you, however, as shotguns tend to be much more intimate than rifles and you need to find the one that's right for you; my brother can't shoot for shit with the Beretta but he adores my dad's old Ithaca that I can't hit the broadside of a barn with. Also, one of the few bad things about the AL 390 is that they're actually selling for more now then when they were new because they have a cult following; Wal-Mart used to sell them for ~$450 into the early 2000s but now you're lucky to find one in good condition (either online or brick-and-mortar) for under $700 and one in pristine condition is probably going to be a couple hundred bucks more.

What birdshot round would you stock up on for overall survival use?
>>
>>30610309
If I could only pick one? It would depend on where I was. What area of the country are you planning on bugging out to?
>>
Stupid noob question. If I buy a 12ga shotgun, can I get shells appropriate for killing small birds, or do I need a little fucker like a 410?
>>
>>30610366
No, you need at least a 10 gauge for small birds.
>>
>>30610385
>not a 2 gauge

Birdshot is awful for home defense though...

Not if you're getting robbed by an uppity grouse.

I'd rather use a net to catch them whole.

Then I'd stick them in a dark cage full of seeds so they'd glut themselves. Let 'em stay in there for a day or so with lots of seeds to eat. Then I'd fucking drown them in a barrel of brandy, let 'em soak for a few hours, followed by plucking and roasting.

Real answer:

The shot is the same and the speed is/can be similar. The difference is the cost and the number of pellets.

More pellets will generally give you more leeway in aiming.

desu senpai that looks like a 1/2" - 1" shallow depression with blood pooled at the bottom

I knew something looked odd about that picture. The first impression is you're looking through a jagged hole in the rib cage into a black emptiness inside, but that wouldn't make any sense because even if the insides were wrecked, what's left of them would still be there.

If it's lead then it should do fine on anything that flys. It's not ideal but it works

Fishing is also great. You can set up trotlines and banklines. The line doubles for snare use too.
>>
...an air rifle. Something line a Ruger Airhawk (RWS-34 copy) is cheap, and 10,000 rounds is cheap.
