I just bought my first gun, a 9mm glock.
What ammo should I use to break it in and how many rounds should I use.
Bonus round: What is a good personal protection cartridge that I can use to load in my mags while I'm storing my gun in my house
Cheap range ammo is fine. Make sure you shoot a mag or two of defensive loads to acclimate to how it feels, though.
For HD get some federal HSTs, I like the 147gr but the 124gr are great too. Gold dots are acceptable as well.

Break in or no break in, you should put at least a hundred rounds through it to make sure everything is working as intended before using it as a defensive arm.

Glocks don't need to be broken in, period. There's only a few guns that require a break in as per the manufacturer (ie. Kahr, some 1911's)
I would stay away from winchester white box, perfecta or whatever shit they sell at walmart. It's dirty, underpowered and overpriced. Buy quality ammo off places like SGAmmo, things like PMC Bronze, Speer Lawman (my favorite), American Eagle and Federal Premium.
As for self defense ammo, either Federal HST 124gr or Speer Gold Dot 124gr. They make P+ 124gr Gold Dots but I really didn't like how they feel, a bit too snappy for my taste when I was shooting my Shield.
And ALWAYS, test your self defense ammo before you rely on it. 95% it will work in a fullsize/compact gun such as a Glock 17/19 but you always want to confirm if it works yourself.

They aren't there's a video from an ammo testing channel that some guy shoots a carhartt jacket multiple times in multiple folds and they all went through. Even .380 went through flawlessly.

I've put about 1000rds of win white box through my g17, 1000rds of freedom AND cheap import shit in a cylindrical box at Wal-Mart. Barely clean my gun other than push brush through barrel when I remember. Shoots erry time.

shoot a at least 200 rounds of any full metal Jacket rounds to break it in, it doesn't matter what flavor. Then give it a good cleaning and lube. The copper grease that comes from the factory will help this.
Any Bonded Hollow Point (Gold Dot, HST, PDX1) will suffice for self defence.
+P ammo is NOT recommended for Glocks
I put 100 rounds through my brand new G43, today. It shot in one ragged hole at 7 yards, no malfunctions.
