Is a Makarov a good idea? They are selling one at the local gunstore for 250. The only other gun I have is a pump action .22.

9x18mak is easily found online. in stores? you might have to go to a place with larger ammo selection like bass pro shop or cabelas. but in any case, i would absolutely buy ammo online, its around 20cpr

A used Zastava M70 would be a lot better, though it's a huge maybe on that pricetag.

carrying such a large pistol that only fits single stack magazines is a little bit impractical
a Zastava M88 or CZ999 would be a much better choice if someone wanted a sub-$300 9mm
Assuming its not a Hungarian (pic related), then $250 is an amazing deal on a Mak, and definitely worth the price.
Even if it is a Hungarian, they're still good pistols, they just use different (and smaller) magazines.
