So how did troops aim their M16s and shit while wearing NVGs in like the gulf war before IR lasers were commonplace?

Did they just kind of struggle to use the irons?
>>
>>30538631
See that laser and optic? That's how.
>>
They weren't little bitches
>>
>>30538631
IR tracers

actually i'm joking i don't even think those exist
>>
Presumably a lot of tracers.
>>
>>30538650
I mean the first gulf war, before IR lasers and optics were commonplace

Night fighting was a lot harder. Rather than everybody being able to fire, you had designated troops with nightvision optics mounted to their weapons. See the glorious PVS-4.
>>
>>30538631

Ground troops barely fought during desert storm.

PVS-4's are still fun as hell though.
>>
>>30538708
Irrelevant, I just mean for the time period.
>>
>>30538706
This. Night fighting was generally avoided. When it did happen, it usually meant you were getting ambushed and accuracy didn't really matter, everyone was just blindly firing tracers all over the fucking place.

Usually a couple guys would be issued NV scopes and shit for patrols, but that's about it.

>>30538708
Also this. The Gulf War was just a bombing campaign with some poor bastards on the ground being forced to hike through the desert really fast.

replacing aiming with more dakka.

I had to use PVS 7, with no PEQ, or optics on the rifle.

You just tilt the rifle so you can kind of look down the carry handle, and then fire bursts at the targets.

I was doing this in 2005, in Iraq. Aviation doesn't get grunt toys, but still had to do a lot of convoys, FARPs, and retrans sites.

>literally NO ONE could do it
>cant see shit
>no one can hit jack fucking shit past 100 yards, and even that was a miracle
>whole platoon tries on 4 seperate occasions
>range master just says fuck it, no one has ever passed this ever by Army standards
>"Just put rounds downrange in the general direction of the Ruskies if you're in your NBC gear your 99.9% guaranteed dead anyway"

On a separate note
>do the gas chamber
>this is intended to inspire confidence in your NBC gear
>half the platoon had holes, tears, or generally didnt work... most of us choke on CS gas

my experiences with NBC is pretty much the same.

though in 2003-2012. They only expected us to hit the 50 and `100 meter targets.

they also told us, that we would dig in if in MOPP gear, and wait for it to be clear.
>>
>>30538631
No, we had PAQ-4s. For most of the life of the AN-PVS series, there was a companion PAQ series IR aiming device.

Some attached troops (engineers, FOs) however did not have PAQ companion devices, and they just walked tracers on target if they had to use direct fire. Generally once shit kicked off though, there were so many flares in the air we just took our NODs off anyway.

>flares

used those once in Iraq. shot them from 203s.

local bad guys evidently had night vision. because infantry guys going out at night for patrols were getting shot in their head. where they had IR beacons.

So we set them up to come out and use their night vision. then we put ton of parachute flares up into the air to blind them for just long enough for us to get their location and suppress them. then the mortar team took care of the rest.

>hardly any ground war during the gulf war
top fucking kek, is that you, Schwarzkopf?

The media has done a damn fine job of putting the muhreens on the coverage-pedistal.

The US Army pulled off some of the most complex maneuvers ever seen in warfare, fought running tank battles in open desert, and utterly dismantled the RGFC as a fighting force within 100 hours of combat.

And ya'll have no fuckin idea that this shit occurred in the last few decades, all because of assholes like Schwarzkopf making sure the cameras follow the marines.

Medina Ridge as well...

Desert Storm wasn't the bloodless bombing campaign that it's been made out to be. Schwartzkopf made sure that CNN was watching the Marines instead of where the fight was really going to take place. Unfortunately, the media bluff is the narrative mostly recorded now...

IR Tracers do infact exist and are used for that exact purpose
