Why does /k/ hate the Marines so much but not the Army?
I see a lot of Army love even though they are more cucked than the marines.
I genuinely don't understand.
>>
>>30538077
its a fad to hate marines, Americans people who are patriotic etc...

there are also probably some marines on here as well. Nobody hates the marines more than actual marines
>>

fpbp. I did my time and moved on, but retards have to keep screaming about

>>
>>30538212
I only hate the autistic 'Hurr muh warrior culture we wus spartans' Marines
Same as I hate full hooah soldiers that don't shut the fuck up about warrior spirit when they never even got their CIB/CAB and all the shit everyone drops after OSUT
>>
>>30538212
Did you like being a marine or did it suck?
>>
>>30538077
It's mostly non mils and boots that have any real animosity. Mixed with civilians that don't understand branch rivalry is just bantz, the equivalent of rooting for a different sports team.

I have a postal gig on Saturday and the post master was in the Army cav, and the guy who runs the trucks is a former Ranger. The Cav guy calls me Jarhead, and when he's in his office me and ranger refer to him as Pogmaster. Honestly I don't care I think it's funny what these basement dwellers talk shit.

-former marine grunt
>>
>>30538077

Probably because the average retard thinks they're special forces... and /k/ takes their anger out on that branch
>>
because they are walking memes who are full of themselves and their bullshit idealistic warrior culture and tattoo semper fi on their forearms

Oh it sucked massive cock. But I did get two god sons, the best friends I'll likely ever have and some experiences out of it I couldn't get elsewhere. It's easy for a lot of people to look back on it with rose tinted glasses, and I admit I do too sometimes, I miss having a clear objective and challenge to feel good about over coming most days, but it doesn't make you better than anyone else on a moral level like a lot of boots and pogues scream on facebook and once I got fours of sleep a night for three months and that was fucking terrible.

The camaraderie is gonna happen anyway, just depends on what degree. If you want to travel, the Navy is no doubt the best way to go. Hell, I don't know what the process is but if you can end up on the seabees you get the travel, better camaraderie than most departments on ship and likely some field craft.

I don't think I'll get placed with the seabees, you need a degree in civil engineering iirc. Maybe I'm just looking at the marines in this glory tinted way, don't even know how to describe it.
I always hear people say don't go muhreens youll die or it's shit compared to the others with shittier everything and you won't get anything out of it. But shit I really don't give a fuck about any of that. Maybe you could shed some light on that.

I feel you, I got convinced to join the Corps because I was told not to by people who knew better because "They did the worst jobs with the least" and that's what I wantedl. But if you're expecting to lead troops into combat.. Well, even if you become an infantry platoon commander the days of deploying every year are long gone. Instead there's a lot of paper work and uniform inspections. And this is my only piece of "Shut up kid, and listen" advice: I know you don't care now, I didn't either, but one day you'll wake up and realize you should have so GET SOMETHING OUT OF IT

Who the hell told you that? Literally the only thing you need a degree for in the military is to become an Officer. I was an Aviation Mechanic and the only prior experience I had was Highschool Shop Class.

The Marine Corps sent me to Aviation school which civilians pay $250,000 to attend. I'm not bragging, the shit they taught us was a joke, my point is, you don't need any prior knowledge to get slotted for an MOS. You just need a decent ASVAB Score and the luck of a spot being open/a Recruiter willing to listen when you say "Fuck you I want this MOS or I'm not joining."

The funny part is, the most insufferable over-indoctrinated retarded over the top dipshit idiots were either fobbits and super pogs who never did anything worthwhile, and shit-bags compensating for not performing well while they had the chance.

My unit did 3 back to back combat deployments, like real ones, not "hurr I went ta iraqistan I iz uh war vet!" Type shit where they sat on camp cupcake for 6 months in an air conditioned office and never even met an actual iraqi, but like, house clearing, door kicking, shooting people every day sleeping in the dirt for months on end type deployments.

To a T all my old buddies are quiet and have a mellow sort of accepted dignified patriotism.

They might hand a USMC flag, have an old moto-tatoo, maybe a tacky bumpersticker at the most.

That guy who literally never left the supply lot at camatpendleton? Hes got 20 bumper stickers, the hat, t-shirt-tattoo combo, literally never shuts the fuck up about it, tries to drag every conversation into being about his enlistment that ended 5 years ago during which his most exciting day was when he issued some canteens to actual combat personel, and talks shit on other branches while spouting nonsensical propaganda and various motivational platitudes.

If somebody is acting like that, they generally are compensating for something most of the time.
>>
>>30540987
Hey man, appreciate your service, but I'm glad I got a hold of a Marine. I'm joining the Navy as a Corpsman and I want to go Combat medic (FMF I believe), what's the general opinion of Navy corpsman in the Marines and did you run with any?

Not him. I'm a Iraq/Afghan 0311 vet that saw my share.

My buddies dad was a late 70's early 80's radio operator. He looks older than he is and always does that "Oorah devil dog" bullshit with me. I almost said something last time I saw him because he had a Vietnam hat on.. mother fucker please.. I don't know why except like you say, over compensation. After we talked I told him to get off my property before I charged him for malingering.

Mechanic is easier if you're not a good swimmer. All Air Crew have to complete higher a level Swimming Class than most other MOS's. They do the "Helo Dunk" too where everyone is strapped into the hull of a Helicopter and it's submerged underwater, then they have to unbuckle and swim their way out.

>>30540874
Apparently I didn't fully read the thread. I thought you were saying you needed an Engineering Degree to become a Seabee. One of my buddies from High School became a Seabee and I know for a fact that dillweed doesn't have any degrees, lol.

>>30540987
Kek, as a POG I was always amused seeing GRUNTS that went on MEUs and acted hard like they did something. There was a lovely sense of irony seeing one of the GRUNTS from my Platoon in Bootcamp scooping my eggs in the Galley on a Naval Ship after he'd talked so much shit about being a hardcore Infantryman back then, haha.

>>30541049
Not the guy you're replying to but there's generally two opinions on Corpsmen and that purely depends on the way they act.

A) This guy is a piece of shit, knows nothing even remotely related to providing medical assistance and needs to stop taking medical equipment out of his Med Bag so he can fit more junk food in it (true story)

or

B) I'm glad this guy is attached to unit because I know he'll be the first person to pull me out of a burning helo/humvee and give me immediate medical aid.

Basically, this >>30541105

>>
>>30541239
>>30541240
Gotcha, I thought I would be good for the rate because I grew up taking care of my vet dad I have a sense of humor, it's how I stay cool under pressure. I've been looking forward to making a joke if someone gets their legs blown off by an IED and say "when I told you to break a leg I wasn't serious", maybe some other stand up stuff like that, is that to tasteless?
>>
>>30541049
Every platoon has a few, greenside corpsmen are basically grunts with medical skills, but tend to fall into two categories.

Theres the absolute badass ones who will clear rooms and get into firefights alongside us who are very competent and you trust them with your life if you are ever wounded. You know that fucker would carry you across broken glass barefoot if he had to, and theyre generally highly respected.

But because they answer to 2 chains of command both navy, and Marine they have the opportunity to float between both to dodge any real work or responsibility from both sides and there are some who are generally shitbags who are fat, lazy, undependable retards who you wouldnt trust with even a bottle of tylenol.

So greenside tends to fall into either great guys, or complete shitbags depending entireley on their own personal choices.

Blue side personel (hospital staff) tend to be regarded as incompetent assholes who will ignore injuries you have to avoid work, or generally botch most of what they touch as they are essentially nurses only less qualified and less vulnerable to litigation for screwing up since their patients are enlisted personel who signed away their rights to lawsuit upon joining and cant hold the specific idiot who mistreated them responsible.

There ARE former greenside badasses who joined blueside after being greenside who are great at thier jobs, but thats pretty rare as greenside tends to look at blueside much the same way us grunts look at supply or admin pogs. Typically a greenside Corpsman going blueside is career minded and just doing it because its eventually a requirement to spend atleast some time blueside in order to get promoted, and arent there because they want to be, or they were the incompetent loser discussed earlier looking for an excuse to not have to go to the field anymore.

Basically, it all comes down to deciding to put the work in not to be a shit head.
>>
>>30541278
>I've been looking forward to making a joke if someone gets their legs blown off by an IED and say "when I told you to break a leg I wasn't serious", maybe some other stand up stuff like that, is that to tasteless?

if you really end up in this situation it more than likely won't come to mind. You'll be too busy trying to keep someone alive

Have a sense of humor. Our doc used to tell new guys he got shot in the ass by a 50 cal. Then would ask if they wanted to see the bullet wound. When they said yes he would drop trough and spread his ass cheeks showing his asshole.
>>
>>30541278
Humor is a good thing but... no.. not in that situation. You're dealing with a man who has a good chance of dying and knows it, you should be doing everything in your power to stem the bleeding.
>>
>>30541289
Well shit man it's rough hearing stuff like this because I've been told repeatedly that it's somewhat unlikely I will be able to go field/combat, and I don't want to be stuck in a fucking hospital. I almost went seabees because it's another combat rate and I may be able to deploy somewhere in the hot zone, but I find corpsman to be far more honorable. Hope that one works out.
>>
>>30541389
That's fair, the whole reason I'm going corpsman is because I've always had a fantastic ability to stay calm under pressure, I know that is a necessity in the medical field. Humor plays a large part in that. That said I know I shouldn't underestimate the emotions at play in a combat scenario.
>>
>>30541367

>>
>>30541390

>>
>>30541428
not really emotions

more or less autonomous response to the current problem is what you want. The thing you don't want is to think about what you could have done to help a guy you constantly broke bread with and come up with a shitty joke before he died

Heh. We made our doc come to our room and didn't quite haze him, so much as "force him to party marine barracks style". Got him drunk as fuck.

>>
>>30541134
I fucking hate it, I usually keep my service to myself because I fucking hate running into some motard who turns out worked at IPAC for 3 years before getting a VERP package to leave a year early or some shit.

And civvies who dont know shit listen to him talk and are in awe of his 2nd hand war stories, guys just sponging attention off of the reputation created by the re ent shitstorm of "totally realistic bruh" war-porn videogames, movies, and books.

Which, is what he wants, validation, cuz deep down inside he is jealous that he never went anywhere or did anything interesting.

My dad was an airforce jet mechanic, he doesnt try to make it sound like he was rambo in the jungle, he just says "I was good at fixing stuff, so I fixed jets for 4 years." Hes proud his jets dropped bombs on saddams tanks in kuwait, but hes not trying to get his ass kissed for it, my younger brother was a marine airwinger who fixed c-130 hydraulics. Same way, hes proud his planes carried stuff we combat personel needed to where we needed it, but he aint trying to get civvies to mumble "thank you for your service" while they suck his dick.

Neither of them have combat expierience like mine, but I respect them for the vital tasks they completed and for not being insecure assholes whoring for attention.

Most Marine grunts have no real problems with POGs or other branches, they have problems with insecure losers, who then get butthurt when you dont want to hear their breathless story about how they sprained their ankle stacking boxes on a UDP to okinwa, or the one about how thier friend of a friend's brothers buddy disarmed an IED with his teeth.
>>

its just a way to entertain yourself

for all the anti gay shit the corps puts up the marines naturally do allot of homo shit
>>
>>30541556

I have scars on left arm now. It took him about 20 minutes and a chief getting fed up with my blood on their medical chair thingy before he got it right.
>>
>>30541591
Yeah. that's one thing I am not looking forward to, not the homo culture but Marines culture in general, it strikes me as very inclusive and locker room, guys slapping eachothers asses and stuff. I don't have an issue with the occasional joke or prank but I'm somewhat introverted (not sure if you follow MBTI bullshit but I'm ISTP), I think I would get annoyed after some time. That's why I'm hoping to go combat, it's a little more sobering and very visceral, I would prefer that over monotony.
>>
>>30541551

This, even the Marines hate the Marines. Only fucking tools enjoy being a Marine.
>>
>>30541556
worst drunks i've ever fucking encountered by far are RP's

something is seriously wrong with those guys. We had an RP Frank when i was on oki. We used to call him Frank the Tank because the dude would go out solo and just get torn up then wander back on base covered in vomit and pass out in the barracks quarter deck
>>

>Most Marine grunts have no real problems with POGs or other branches, they have problems with insecure losers

Oh, I agree. Life isn't like /k/ and it's bullshit. I was a 4 year man, but treated everyone with respect. The golden rule and the power of please.

I appreciate the guys who brought my mail, dropped Intel, overwatch. Shit I have two Pelican cases full of swag ass milsurp because I was kind to the supply guys. They knew we were out in the suck, so they hooked it up. Like you said earlier I believe, 1 team.

You go months without even seeing a woman who isnt wearing a burqua and the sexual frustration tends to bleed over into the sense of humor a little bit.

Then you get back to the US and even the 5/10 girls look like absolute goddesses, but you have somewhat forgotten how to talk to women, and in an all male unit even still rareley see em except from a distance and maybe on weekends if you got enough money to go out somewhere.

No idea why the SJW's wanna toss women into that mix. Like having a pen of hungry wolves and crying "why are sheep so under-represented in this zoo exhibit! We need atleast 10 percent of this hungry wolf exhibit to include sheep by 2020!"

Meanwhile, even the wolves are going "uh yeah, you reaaalllllly sure thats a good idea, you DO realize what we are and what we do right?"

Guess it a little off topic, but basically, humans are animals and a lot of stuff in the military creates unatural and uncomfortable situations and its not suprising that some peoples reaction to such scenarios is going to be equally strange.

People arent meant to live elbow to elbow with zero entertainment for months on end under constant stress, and will find various odd outlets for the stress and frustration. Mostly lots of dirty humor and breaking stuff.

ive gotten so much more done by asking marines if they could help me or trading tasks over trying to use my rank

then again ive been told i treat everyone like shit BUT THATS BECAUSE I'M A FUCKING ASSHOLE WHO HATES HIMSELF! WRITE THAT SHIT ON MY FITREP CALL THE MONITOR I DON'T GIVE A FUCK!
>>
>>30541907
Made me laugh.

I had 4 months left and got sent down to the gym to work until my enlistment ended cuz I didnt have enough time left to contribute anything to the pre-deployment workup.

Some gunny at headquarters battalion who was in charge of us EASers got it into his head to make us run a PFT with two weeks left before some of us were civilians again.
We intentionally did the bare minimum on all events because it was retarded, hes all "IMMAH WRITE YOU ALL ADVERSE FITREPS" then almost had a seizure when we were all giggling about it making comments like

"BUT GUNNY! THEN HOW WILL I PICK UP STAFF SGT?!!!!!"
And
"OH GAWD, NOT MY CAREER PROGRESSION!"

Hes trying to threaten a miniscule amount of career damage to guys whose military careers are effectivley over, it was hilarious.
Swear to god they put something in the coffee over at HQ or something.

RP's are magical. For every conservative priest we had as chaplain his RP was a inner city kid who would get wasted at the slightest excuse.
>>
>>30542115
Our Chaplains were always these strange skinny wierdos who somehow managed to make every conversation uncomfortable.

Guy would walk up with spaghetti spilling out of his pocket awkwardly asking questions that amounted to "nobody here is going to kill themselves right?"

We were once co-located with the Danish army and they had the most badass chaplain ive ever met.

Guy was built like a viking berseker and basically worked out and chilled in the smoke pit all the time.

One day our chaplain was walking by and saw the dude curling more than a lot of guys can benchpress and goes "how do you get so big?"

The danish chaplains response was to roar in heavily accented english "SOME OF US STILL BELIEVE IN THA OLD GODS!"

our skinny ass socially awkward chaplain practically fell over himself scurrying out of there.

Doesn't work that way anon. To be an officer you've need to go ROTC or military academy (west point/anapolis). Four years of school followed by a five or nine year commitment.

Officers are managers. Aside from maybe some time as a boot LT, and later a company CO you will be locked behind an office door and force fed PowerPoint until your soul dies. As a manager there is little time for comradery in fact, touchline be an ineffective leader is you are too chummy with the enlisted.

You have to care about them, but you can't care too much because you may have to give those same men orders which might place them in danger or get them killed. Yet, you must give those orders and follow your own orders because the job and mission come first...

The military is not CoD/Battlefield cut scenes or the BS that Hollywood/TV makes it or to be.

If interested in med & mil, just go for med school and go be a mil doc or look into military nursing.

If it hasn't been said, Marines are easy to bait. In my time in the Army, I never dealt with a Marine who wasn't either a total bro or at least an up most professional. My Dad was a Navy Corpsman, so I grew up around a bunch of Marines who were good guys and a blast to be around.

I don't think anyone has an actual problem with them, theyre just easy to trigger for the lulz.

I just completed OCS for the Marines a week ago. One of my buddies ended up getting real bad rope burn on the O Course somehow. Thankfully the corpsman for my platoon was the fucking shit

I'm not sure. The people I know who were in the Navy or Marines are very stable and normal. My Uncle from Air Force is very cool too. The only thing I find irritating about Marines is when their pride reaches the point that the only way they can make themselves look better is to make everyone else look worse.

I don't care who you are or what you did, if you're so full of yourself that you go on and on about how you're better than everyone and how everyone else is shit, you're an attention hungry annoying little asshat regardless of your background.

Thankfully that's a minority, I know.

>>30540987
This, basically. Only person on /k/ I've seen who made a special point of telling me he was a marine was one who misinterpreted me trying to defend the marine corps from a bad portrayal in media, into me somehow hating on the marine corps and proceeding to rag on me at length for how 'arrogant' and 'disrespectful' I was and how I couldn't begin to understand the depth of their warrior bond and so on and so forth.

Liar.

You have to go to a general courtmarshall to get a dishonorable discharge. They wouldnt do more than an NJP, MAYBE a summary courtmarshall for a DUI, but the latter only in an extreme case (multiple offenses in a short time)
>>
>>30557918
>courtmarshall
Its court martial. As in, a martial court.

And this is no longer true, hasnt been since at least 08, we went to zero tolerance on DUIs. First one=discharge, though it's usually "general-other than honorable" and is prosecuted through normal courts martial by a field grade officer then the finding (verdict) is referred to the first flag officer in CoC for review/approval.
>>
>>30557939
I'm not him. But was muhreen Infantry.

I think it's at commands discretion. Knew a guy who was an e4, promoted to e5. Got a DUI celebrating becoming an a Sgt, got NJP'd from Corporal to Lcpl.

He was a shit hot dude tho, they let him deploy and still allowed him to be squad leader as an e3, only one in battalion. This was around 2010.
>>
>>30557939
1 DUI is not immediate discharge not where i was anyway. We had 11 or so DUI's and not a 1 got discharged for it. Only discharge i saw was a guy who got 3 DUI's in a row.

People like him are the reason commands want to do the 1 and done mentality
>>
>>30538077
I dislike all branches equally
>>
>>30557968
Did my entire career (longevity retired in 2014) in 18th abn corps, split pretty evenly between 82nd, 25th, and 3rd IDs.

Unilaterally, after 2008 if you got a DUI you were gone. Rapidly. Didn't matter if you were a cherry E2 or the brigade CSM who earned a silver star with V in Grenada (supposedly), you were out.

If you were a passenger with a soldier who got a DUI you got a field grade art15 if you were under E7 and you got a congressional letter of reprimand and relieved from any position of prestige/authority if you were E7+ (a guaranteed career killer).

Prior to about 2008 it depended on the command and generally they only fried shitbags and repeat offenders.
>2004 about 3 weeks prior to a deployment a hot-shit E5 recent RIP grad got a DUI and felony reckless endangerment charges after leading Fayetteville police on a high speed chase then running the Butner gate and wrecking just shy of the Firestone
>incident got swept under the rug and charges magically disappeared, he deployed and picked up E6 in secondary zone while deployed
