Bumping. Anyone read the Tomorrow, When the War Began series? I saw the first movie and I liked it so I'm considering picking it up but just wondering if anyone else has read it.
>>
>>30505199
I remember reading the book at some point while in school (like, 4 years ago maybe).
I remember it being pretty good but idk how much it got /k/ stuff right

>Dancing in the Glory of Monsters
Absolutely fantastic read on the 1st and 2nd Congo Wars. While it isn't too heavy on the combat aspects of it the book does a great job providing context and viewpoints of many of the sides involved in the largest war ever fought in Africa. Taught me among other things
>The Congo is where ideologies go to die
>African paratroopers are crazy (the African paratroopers threadcap that goes around here was about the Congo War)
>If your enemy is better equipped but you are much better trained, you can fuck them up
>Rwandans are operator as fuck
>>

I'm still making my way through Fireforce

That's a damn good book on the day to day life in the RLI. If you have time, read this one by Dennis Croukamp. Guy was operator as fuck, but plays it all off in a rather humorous way. This guy was stuck deep in Mozambique after an insertion and had to make his way back to Rhodesia all the while dodging FRELIMO patrols. This guy did every sort of operating under the sun, all with equipment that was on a shoestring budget. It also includes pictures he took.

If you liked One Soldier's War check out these three. They're great. Not quite as heavy as One Soldier's War (Zinky Boys gets pretty damn heavy tho) but they're all still great. Also >>30505629, I enjoyed Fireforce more than One Soldier's War, and the sequel Out of Action is also a fantastic read with some great parts oper8ing on horseback with some old Boers burning down communist huts inna veld

Some of the German memoirs are on par with One Soldiers War.

War Dogs: Fighting Other Peoples Wars is fantastic book. It covers the various associations and ties mercenaries have to Africa and how they affect the region. It puts a different light on the people than "money hungry killers" and the South African Author is a very good writer. It is a humorless but energetic style that does not mince words, and does not overly emphasize what emotion a reader should feel towards a certain subject. It covers the Helicopter pilot Neal Ellis, Executive Outcomes from South Africa, and even American and SAS mercenaries. It also shows just how fucked the CIA is every once in a while.

This is an excellent and didactic read about the collapse of America. Really makes you think "what if this actually happened," and the author's military segments are very insightful

Sven Hassel.
Wheels of Terror and SS-general are my favorite works of his. The books are quite historically inaccurate, but they are great showing the comradery between soldiers and the humor they use to cope with horrors of war.
>>
Unintended Consequences obviously.

Also, can anyone recommend a book that covers all ammo types with their characteristics, history etc? I want to make some sense of the billion types there are. Think absolutely beginner tier.

Didn't really like One Soldier's War. Also he's a somewhat controversial figure with his anti-war political activism and composite characters.

Fireforce was pretty interesting, but not phenomenal.

Really loved Starship Troopers, but more the introductory chapter and its perspective on civic duty and ideology.

Two I could give high recommendations that I haven't seen in this thread yet would be Unintended Consequences and Tigers in the Mud. The first is a fictional work that really fascinated me. A lot of /k/ politics, but I liked the specifics, allusions to historical events, and just the interesting narrative. The second, Otto Carius's biography, saying how it was on the eastern front as a German tanker, then moving to the western front in the "wonderweapon" jagdtiger.

Currently, House to House --the memoir of the clearing of Fallujah, is on the rack, but I'm looking for more good reads.

If you like those, you'll also like Free Fall by Nicolai Lilin. It's heavy as fuck (guy claims that all the stories are real just not all lived by himself). Siberian Education is excellent as well, just not a war book, it's about growing up in the russian mafia.

Just finished this one not to long ago. I definitely enjoyed it and for someone who has always wanted to know more about what PMCs do. This book help shed a little light on that subject.
From the cover I get this sense that the writer is trying a lot to come off as a beard bearin, bullet muchin, babby killer. However if anything by the end of the book it reveals just how human and fragile some members of the special forces can be.
Also the story has events all over the world ranging from humdrum VIP security work in China, to the balls to the wall assault on the American Embassy in Benghazi.

If anyone is looking for something PMC related this one is definitely worth a read overall, and if anyone could recommend any other PMC focused books that would be great!

I hesitate to call this a CLASSIC only because my library of completed military non-fiction is quite small, but man I considerate it anyway. A fantastic book that covers the journey of a few cool spooks across Afghanistan during the opening blows of the war on terror. The book totally captures the feel of being thousands of miles from any friendly elements. As well as completing one of the spookiest of spooky missions of all time with only a handful of fine gentlemen, a nation of tireless fighters, and a couple of fly-boys.
For anyone interested in the military special operations that occurred in Afghanistan directly after 9/11. This is the book for you.

About 300 pages or so. It's not too long.

Another book I liked was "One Hundred Days" by Sandy Woodward. He recounts his time as commander of the British task force aboard HMS Hermes, but also added his day-to-day journal entries at the end of the book. It's one thing to hear about the overview after a battle, but another entirely to read a commander's thoughts while the result is in doubt.

Also, it really hit home about ships and their maintenance. The biggest goal was accomplishing the retaking of the islands before the fleet fell apart. The second was making the various important bits work (like the Marconi employee who was aboard Brilliant doing tech support while being strafed by Argentinian Mirages).

Watch a unit crumble as the Iraq insurgency goes into overdrive. Total failure of leadership. See how war can take some men with an already twisted moral compass and lead them right over the edge. Compelling on multiple levels.
