We are currently living in a world that's the worst case scenario both for the US's founding fathers and for those who decided to try to leave the Union. Yes, but in this case all the problems between the north and south can be boiled down to 'Stop using slaves, retards'. Yeah, you may have took a hit economically, and the Union were just people doing their jobs, but holy shit, stop pretending like the south would have just done the right thing out of the kindness of their hearts either.

NO THEY CAN'T Fuck guy, learn some real history, not this white guilt gotta hate the evil racist South because the North was such a perfect meltingpot history that they're trying to force on everyone now. The North and South were only barely on the same page as far back as the Revolutionary War (and prior, if we're being really honest) and there's a ton of different cultural and economic factors behind this that patently have not a damn thing to do with slavery and created rifts just as deep. Slavery is just what the final breakup fight was picked to be about.

I'm not pretending that the South would have ended slavery through the kindness of their hearts. They would have done so at least by the 1870s because of economic pressures. It was becoming VERY unpopular in Europe to continue trading with the slaveholding states. Slavery would have ended just because it was fucking unprofitable as more and more European trade partners stopped trading with them. Not a shot fired. Slaves freed. State sovereignty preserved...and this is really the lynchpin fact that seals that the civil war was about expanding and consolidating federal power: Washington knew this was the case. They knew, the South knew that chattel slavery was on its last legs.

No disrespect, but I find it rather bizarre that an entire region of millions would devote so much of its intellectual energy into perpetuating 19th century grudges that have virtually no bearing on their lives.
I mean, I'm fairly certain that some of my ancestors were United Empire Loyalists that lost property during the American War of Independence. I don't use my heritage to scream about how evil the traitorous yank rebels are/were and I think that the few people who do make a big deal about having UEL ancestry are kinda weird.

Except it does. See, you've probably only ever heard of the civil war, then the civil rights movement. You probably never learned about the bit that really set whites against blacks and caused a bunch of fucked up laws get passed, and was frankly one of our worst moments as a country: Reconstruction.
The North basically assfucked the South during Reconstruction, completely crippled whatever economy there could have been, disenfranchised citizens, a bunch of shit.
And you see in this thread all of the hate being spewed toward Southerners? Hell, I bet you've got a stereotypical view of Southerners as racists, while the midwest is infinitely more racist, Pennsylvania has the most hate groups of any state, and integration in Boston schools wasn't completed until the 1980s (no, that's not a typo, 1980s) and Boston was literally rioting over this shit. This affects our economy. This affects our livelihoods, this affects our ability to go somewhere and not be immediately written off.
It's also strongly linked to libertarian versus authoritarian political philosophies, but that's kind of a side thing.

Because instead of his (And later Johnson's) understanding of the South's complaints and desire to help them rebuild and reintegrate into the Union, Booth pissed tons of people off and got the South hammered by Radical Republicans and their Reconstruction policies.
