There was this weird transitory period before we got large scale turrets but after we got propeller driven ironclads. The battleship as we know it only showed up around WW1.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but why are battleships always rather short and wide looking? Compared to other ships, it looks like their "hull" or whatever the body is doesn't rise must past the surface of the water.

A wider body means a more stable platform for shooting guns. That doesn't matter for up close, but if you're shooting at something in the distance it is nice if you have a stable platform to fire from.

Also it's good that you have a short silhouete because its simply less likely for enemy shells hit you than if you were a bigger ship.
