Fuck if I know? I come from a family of engineers, doctors and overall smart people. I'm good at sports and lift on the reg.

I have no fucking knowledge of the type of skills you need to be a fighter pilot. However, I got my PPL in 45 hours, I currently fly on a DR400 a,d I'm going to learn aerobatics on a Cap10.

Either apply to air force academy, or get your degree and get a guard pilot degree. Non academy graduate officers get slim pickings of active air force pilot positions.

>>
>>30497899
1. Do you have a college degree
2. Is it in a STEM field?
3. Do you have good vision (i.e. not require glasses)?
4. Do you know high ranking people in the Navy or Air Force?
5. Do you have a clean record?
6. Do you have steady hands?
7. Can you sit still for a long time without losing it?
8. Are you between 5'5" and 6'0"?

If you answered "no" to just one of these then you can't be a fighter pilot. NFO, maybe.

It's not as hard as you would think. Just so you know, getting jets is left up to pure chance/needs of the service. My brothers flies harriers for the Marines and he pref'd rotor wing originally. Also knew guys who pref'd jets and got rotor. My brother had a BA in history, so people who say you must have a STEM degree are full of shit. As long as you are reasonably smart and can pass the ASTB (apparently not hard, you just have to study), you can land a spot in flight school. Just brush up on your 4th grade math and basic high school physics. Once you are in flight school, it is in their best interest to have you NOT wash out because of the money they are dumping on training you. My brother said only something like 1% of his class at API at Pcola washed out, and that was mainly guys who were total shitheads/deemed a training liability or just voluntarily dropped because they decided flying was not for them. If you show that you want to be there, are willing to put in the hours, study hard, then you WILL fly.

Just make sure this is what you want to do because they own you for like 10 years after you get winged. Good luck, OP.

You don't go in as a fighter pilot, you train as a pilot and only the best of each clasd gets picked for fighter slots. Others get shuffled of to c130s and such.

Getting a fighter slot is extremely competitive and your going up against people who can do calculus in their heads. Good luck.
>>
>>30500427
I answered no to 2, 4, 5, and 8 but the Navy is letting me fly super hornets... what gives?
>>
How old are you? If the USAF is anything like the RAAF, there's a strong bias towards recruiting pilots as young as they can. Cut of age is 27 here with school leavers or those fresh out of uni top preferred. Also iv'e been told that they actually like people with out prior flying experience because that way they don't have to unteach bad habits.
>>
>>30507652
I can do calculus in my head you cunt. Anyone who went to highschool can. If you can't then you've got shit for brains and shouldn't pass on your subpar genes.

They arent required in the USA either. Want to know the real answers, go to your local general aviation airport ask around. You'll find an ex military pilot who will be glad to talk your ear off. Probably working as a flight instructor part time just for fun. You might be amazed at the guys you'll meet. The whole fighter pilot is larger than life myth is just that. They are pretty regular guys.

>>30497899
Hey nick.
>>
>>30500814
That used to be the case, but it's not any more. SecAF has been pushing a more equal-opportunity approach for AFROTC and OCS grads
>>
Navy JROTC here. OP, most of these people on here are either enlisted trash, or not even in the service at all, so I'll shed some light on how it actually works. No you do not need a STEM major to fly. In the Navy, STEM majors with high GPA are most likely getting picked for subs. Pick any major you like, it only matters in terms of getting a contact. In terms of getting selected for aviation, the only things that matter are ASTB, physical, and OML ranking in your unit. Once you get selected, you're going to train, and ultimately select. Unfortunately, NSS only goes so far, and really depends on what board you're going through and how well your class is doing in order to get jets. Good luck, being NJROTC I have a lot more knowledge than 99.99% of the people on this board, so when I graduate high school 2 years from now I'll be one step ahead of the game.
>>

>It's not as hard as you would think. Just so you know, getting jets is left up to pure chance/needs of the service.
There are minimum grade cutoffs for selecting pipelines and graduating a syllabus.

>Once you are in flight school, it is in their best interest to have you NOT wash out because of the money they are dumping on training you.
Different VTs have different philosophies on attrition. Even in AJET you may be attrited if command feels that you are just likely to get a FNAEB in the RAG.

>As long as you are reasonably smart and can pass the ASTB (apparently not hard, you just have to study), you can land a spot in flight school.
There is no "passing" the ASTB. There are cutoffs per board for what they will consider, but even then it's graded similarly to an NSS where it's based on standard deviaition amongst peers.

>Just make sure this is what you want to do because they own you for like 10 years after you get winged.
My commitment was wings + 8 years... I believe Marines have the same requirement. Works out to about 10 years with time to train. More for jets.
>>
>>30513879
Yeah trip 7's is considered the minimum for competitive, check the trips on my post for proof

Well... Just remember when it comes time to select out of primary... Helos are in San Diego... C-2s you can be in Pt. Mugu... Jets you're either in Oceana where the command climate is kind of dogshit or you can be in Lemoore where it's generally pretty good but everything else is dogshit... Whidbey too, I guess but honestly growlers are gay. Every time I'm in San Diego I kind of wish I had gone helos... Helos seem like such a happy place.

My 1/C cruise was in Oceana, got to ride in the backseat of F-18s for 4 weeks w/ VF-106. I didn't think it was too bad at the time. Everyone in the squadroom seemed really cool, but I guess it could have just been because they were trying to show us a good time.

My first choice is jets, 2nd is helos though. But who knows, a lot can change in 2 years and I could change my preferences.

No love for E-2/C-2? Honestly you could get through your first fleet tour before they make the move to the Osprey... C-2s are the way to go man... God I wish I had gone C-2s...

Plus, waking up to f-18s taking off every morning was quite the alarm clock.

Oh god the e-2 is the only thing I don't want to fly. The c-2 would be pretty neat (yes I know, they are pretty much the same). But the e-2 is so fucking ugly my god kill it with fire.

If I could guarantee getting the C-2 over E-2, fuck yeah I'd do it. But I really, really don't want the E-2. Sounds really stupid and superfluous I know, but oh well.
