What years were considered the Golden age of Mercs/PMCs?
An era or decade where you could fight in a conflict for good money and go home without worrying about too much rules or regulations. A time defined by a warjunkie profiting from just about anything without repercussions.
30 years war.
1600s, in what would now be called germany.
France, sweden, the HRE, and free german city states in a 4-way knock-down-drag-out.

No particular decade, but the period between the 60s and the 90s, starting roughly with the Katanga emergency in 61 and ending with the settlement of the South African border conflicts in the late 80s. The 50s too if you count the Algerian war. During this time mercenary work was constant and abundant all over Africa and the developed world. You could ague this period continued into the 90s with EO, but they were borne of the very bureaucracy that would kill them once they stopped being useful.

This is the objectivity correct answer.
Africa in the 60s and 70s was a mercenary wet dream. The entire continent was destabilized with dozens of factions willing to pay anyone with a pulse to come in and kill whatever other dark-skinned fools they were up against. Equipping your merry band of hired guns wasn't an issue either, since WWII vehicles and weaponry could be had for a mediocre blowjob.

Mid 90s when executive outcome rekt African countries so hard that the UN cried
The ancient ear to the 1600s sell swords were very alot more common back then. It was not very uncommon for an army to bolster its self with some local sell swords.

is it just me or was this entire boss fight some kind of obscure edgelord fantasy where the edgy teenager gets to strike back at dad as a cyborg ninja
Check out the movie"Shadow Company" for a good look at PMC's and mercenaries.

Kinda. At it's core Revengeance is just a dumb fun cash-in where it was over the top for the sake of being over the top. I figure that's probably how Kamiya interpreted the wishes of Kojima, probably as a joke between friends or something.

Looks kinda like Jake Gyllenhaal.
