> What's this thread about?
As usual this thread is for the discussion and pics of tracked and wheeled AFVs of all kinds from MBTs to supertanks to self propelled AA guns. Please keep it civil and cite sources for statistics.

The LAV III is a derivative of the Swiss MOWAG (now a subsidiary of GDELS) Piranha IIIH, yet it deserves examination within the context of its unique and indispensable role within the Canadian Army itself, and its influence in neighbouring America’s Stryker. Canada’s involvement with the LAV III stems from July 1991, when the military had identified an urgent need for replacements for 1960s-70s era AFVs. $2.8 billion was allocated for the Multi-Role Combat Vehicle (MRCV) by the Conservatives, with the express goal of creating a common family to replace the Grizzly, Bison, Lynx and M113 variants in service. Due to budgetary constraints, however, it was cancelled by March 1992. With the return of the Liberals in 1994, however, a new Light Armoured Vehicle programme was undertaken, spurred by both Army requests and concerning reports of underwhelming Canadian AFV performance during UNPROFOR in the Yugoslav Wars. On August 16, 1995, General Motors Diesel Division was awarded the contract to produce the new LAV III, a combination of the Coyote’s turret and weaponry, along with the latest developments in the Piranha family. The vehicle itself carries seven passengers and three crew, propelled by a Detroit Diesel six cylinder diesel engine and its main armament consisted of a TIS enabled Bushmaster 25 mm and a 7.62 mm coaxial. In operation, there are typically two “air sentries”, standing on the benches to look out the back deck for security. There are currently 651 in Canadian service, a substantial portion of which have improved IED protection.

OP: As always, feedback, suggestions wanted and appreciated.
Happy Canada Day! I must confess I was mulling the idea of Independence Day, but since the actual date of Canada Day was closer, and I was pretty interested in the LAV, I chose Canada.
The protection of the LAV III amounts to a Level III equivalency along STANAG 4569 guidelines, with all round protection from 7.62x51 mm NATO rounds. The protection of the LAV III has been significantly improved over the years, with the early introduction of the ceramic Modular Expandable Armour System (MEXAS) officially bequeathing next level protection up to 14.5x114 mm rounds from 500 m. Furthermore, in 2008, the Canadians undertook a comprehensive series of programmes aimed at packages for protection against 30 mm AP, EFPs and particularly IEDs emerging, with the IED upgrades becoming a staple of continued operations in Afghanistan. These upgrades cumulatively were $68 million with the IED package alone being an additional $13.5 million. Nevertheless, for a military that had sustained the vast majority of its casualties in actions involving the LAV III, these upgrades were a necessary investment. In 2011, with IEDs still being a pressing threat, General Dynamics was awarded a contract to upgrade 550 LAV IIIs with further mine protection along with an extension of the vehicle’s lifespan to 2035. The LAV III has performed admirably in most respects in Canadian service, with issues such as feared rollovers being negligible – only sixteen, operating in very rough terrain were ever reported – and the lack of protection in Afghanistan being addressed with ad hoc solutions or later modular addons, and tools such as the Nanuk RWS. However, unlike the Leopard 2A6M’s outstanding protection in Afghanistan, the LAV III is still a much lighter vehicle, with the limitations that entails against the pernicious threat of IEDs and explosive weaponry.

More tank news, as per the new format.
If you have more queries regarding a news story, just point it out, and I’ll further elaborate and provide links.

Following on from news of the USMC’s trialing of Israeli Trophy APS, the US Army is now looking to foreign systems for solutions to emerging missile threats to AFVs. Four separate systems, two of which are Israeli in origin and one domestic will be trialed on the Stryker, Abrams and Bradley, projected to be deployed on European units once integration is complete. This is expected to be an interim solutions, as MAPS (Modular Active Protection System) the Army’s own effort is still in development.
South Korea’s DAPA is now examining methods of improving the efficiency of its 155 mm howitzers. At the Defence IQ Future Artillery conference in London, Lt Col Chung Win Jee spoke of the potential in automation of artillery systems to prevent manpower losses in any North Korean counterbattery or preliminary targeting effort, and reducing the garrison requirements on the border.
NORINCO is now exporting a new 120 mm mortar WMZ-551. The system is not an exceptional deviation from existing designs, but does offer full amphibious capabilities, and a recoil system mitigating the need for stabilisers.
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has received its final prototype of the 29 tonne next generation AFV to replace the state’s M113A2 Ultra APC fleet. The currently unnamed vehicle is currently under development by the Defence Science and Technology Agency in partnership with Singapore Technologies, the project dating back to 2006, and it is expected that it will be complete by 2019.
The UK Ajax has now completed its first air portability trials at the Joint Air Delivery Test and Evaluation Unit at RAF Brize Norton. The Ares platform was driven onto a real size mockup of the standard air transporters in British service, and tie down drills were practised onboard.

And that’s all for now.

So earlier in the week there was a bait thread that involved an argument over roadwheels on the T-14 and Abrams.

It did produce a image that has the scale based on the T-14 with 700mm roadwheels and the Abrams with 25 inch roadwheels (per photos and manufacturers webpages).

Why is modern artillery not one piece ammunition? You have to load the primer, the propellant and everything seperately. Wouldn´t you be able to get a higher rate of fire if all you had to do was slam a shell into the breech and fire it?

Also, how come when you watch videos of the M109 in use, there is a guy cleaning the inside of the breech with a damp towel after its been fired? The guy does this at 23 seconds in this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZSVnHFDO6g
>>
>>30477384
Different amounts of propellant let you more accurately hit the ranges you want. You're not always going to be firing as far as possible
>>
>>30477384
>Why is modern artillery not one piece ammunition?
Because automated loading with multiple piece rounds can be made faster than you manhandling >100 lbs of one piece ammo.
>primer
With novel ignition schemes like microwave based or plasma igniter you don't need a conventional primer at all.
>Wouldn´t you be able to get a higher rate of fire if all you had to do was slam a shell into the breech and fire it?
ROF isn't everything. Actually shooting at full charge at burst speeds would get you a burst barrel in no time. This is why for guns that would attempt a good MRSI count MACS are a necessity. Not only because you want to cut the time the lower angle shots take but because you want to preserve the barrel from the immense stresses of firing after full and slightly less charges.

>seeing as crew comfort is that big of a problem in the first place for the Abrams?

Most nations with fairly competent militaries have both mobile howitzers and multiple rocket launchers systems, so they obviously have different roles, but what are those different roles?

One fires big bullets a long way away while the other one fires big rockets a long way away, so it seems like they carry out a similar job.

Thales is working together with GDLS on this tender. Thales already have the advantage of already having a manufacturing presence in Australia due to Hawkei and Bustmaster production, and we already have an LAV based vehicle in service. The RMA for phase 2 (should have) ended on the 30th, so a short list on candidates shouldn't be too far off. Goes without saying that the winner of phase two will have an influence on the potential winners of phase 3 (tracked IFV replacement for M113AS4s) given that the commonality with armaments is sound logistically.

GLDS would most likely offer the ASCOD/Ajax, while Rheinmetall would offer the Puma with the Boxer, and BAE would most likely offer the CV9035/Armadillo with the Patria AMV. Phase 3 tender isn't going to happen until 2018-19 though.

Rocket arty can dump rockets a lot faster than a gun battery can, and can change position almost immediately afterwards.

Gun artillery can be corrected and be more accurate, thus allowing the guns to target a specific location and provide closer support with ground forces.

stuff like the GMLRS kind of overlaps because the rockets can be dead-on accurate providing you give the right target information, but traditional rocket arty is more of a saturation kind of thing.

in other words,

Gun Arty = "Fuck this guy and his buddies"

Rocket Arty = "Fuck this guy and anyone standing one mile around him"

Are you kidding? Slavboos gone full autism over it in almost all Armata threads when someone called it large, they then told how Armata is measure with the remote controlled machinegun, while the M1A2 is measured by the top of the roof of the turret on wikipedia and similar crap, which is somewhat true, but Armata is still larger. Just be happy you didnt witness it, it was brain melting advanced vatnik thinking. They even made a fake version, were the Armata top of turret was a bit smaller than the M1A2. And since we could witness this derailing too often already, yes the Armata turret is smaller, but no, this doesnt make it the smaller tank.

Are we already in the typical russian "No one ever said that, you got it all wrong, let me tell you about this other thing and why russians outsmart everyone else instead"-phase? Because it was literally about them telling everyone how the Armata is smaller than a M1A2.

On the way of never ending train of slavboo shit that been spammed endlessly and after things showed otherwise gets acted like never been posted:
[x]Tanks must be small or they are shit
[x]Armata is smaller than an M1A1
[ ]Armata is bigger, but of course that is no drawback
Because it is never about actually discussing anything, but having the next straw to grasp.

It is normal for the 14.5mm resistant applique armor to be mounted, and there is supposed to be a 30mm resistant kit for the front arc.

Are you really telling me you never witnessed one of those Armata small and everyone telling otherwise is an idiot rants? I come 2-3 a week at best to /k/ and still manage to witness those a few times in the past months.
Not even the guy, just saying before stuff gets confused.

>>
>>30483014
No offense, but post like yours just seem to turn up not just by chance pretty often around when russians have gotten BTFO again to create a total twisted vibe around it.

Basically the same pattern we could see in the other thread, the second the corrected version was "questioned". Even if you or one of the others didnt do it on purpose it is rather strangely coincidental.
>>
>>30483095
I only go on /thg/ tank threads, the rest I ignore because its normally that gavin guy talking about his M113 or shitposting between everyone. Rest of my visits to /k/ are just firearm related.

>>30483370
Nah mate, I wasnt sure what that other thread was about and I asked and then people thought I was Russian. I love me a good discussion on the T-72/T-90 but I don´t bother with the Armata.

Driver of a 25. It's not too common for our vehicles to get stuck. Then again I'm at dusty, dry Pendleton. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen. And when they get stuck, it can be a bitch, especially if the idiot gets it into a bad rut. I've had to reattach an output shaft while laying in 6in deep mud. That's beyond my echelon of maintenance. Then I had to sort the POL from the mud. It was a truly amazing experience.

>[x]Tanks must be small or they are shit
A smaller target is always better, dumbkopf, all things being equal.
>[x]Armata is smaller than an M1A1
Yes, it is. But they also don't have the same volume of interior to protect. The Soviets and Russians have always prided themselves on the "muh armor-to-volume ratio", remember. The T-14 is set to have a smaller projection to protect than the Abrams simply because the crew are lying on the hull floor F-1 style while all you have to worry up top is the gun.
>[ ]Armata is bigger, but of course that is no drawback
Its easier to spot since its bigger on the outside yes. It could have a problem traversing close terrain but if it does somebody done fucked up anyway(ie they are in Korea or Japan or someplace with narrow as fuck neighborhoods.).

Shermans caught on fire as often as most other workhorse tanks of WWII, and maybe even less with wet stowage, plus the Ronson slogan happened after WWII.
And the M4's armor was on par with the Panzer IV if not better as North Africa showed.

Common myths/defunct info/offerings the US Army has not expressed interest in are a MTU diesel engine, the XM360 gun, an autoloader or trying to make the tank multiple tons lighter.

Also keep in mind the US is going to select an APS to field on units stationed in Europe, Abrams are very likely to get Trophy within 1-2 years.

You're both retards, we've operated tanks since WW2. We didn't get Leopard 2A4/6's until Afghanistan because that's when the DND we saw how effective our Leopard C2's were despite their age. They then decided it was time to upgrade from C2's and buy a shitload of Dutch Leo2A4's for bargain bin prices because their government decided they don't need tanks anymore for some magical reason.

>>
>>30493389
I think advances in ammunition (M829A4 wise) offer better performance than gun upgrades.
>>
>>30493389
The M256 is not the L44, but to answer your question the US decided to improve its ammunition instead of adopting a longer barrel.

Thus the M829A3 and M829A4.
>>
>>30493827
The longer barrel allows ammunition to attain higher velocities, so it's not a performance thing but most probably a cost issue. How many Abrams should be upgraded against just introducing some new ammunition?

nope, it is for fixing alignment of the gun and sight in the field, have been seen on T-90 and T-80U

not the device that measure barrel curvature after it heat up

the one i post was use for checking gun/sight alignment in the field. during combat, maneuvering and such the zeroing will change because of recoil, vibration. it help the crew doing field maintenance. it is consists the muzzle and the main gun reticle

real muzzle reference system are use to containly tracking the muzzle, because during combat, the main gun heat up and curve upward, the system sending singal to the ballistic com, and the rest are done by machine

So both of the Challengers are protected by plastic and metal? Or was that comment about 'some modern ones might use ceramic' unsure?
>>
>>30499031
Considering that the actual composition of the modern chobam plates seems to still be classified, it's possible that the spaced plates might use a ceramic reinforcement instead of just being solid plastic or solid metal.

Visually we can see that the armor is spaced plates, but there appears to be room for speculation as to -what- the spaced plates are made of.

From what I understand Depleted Uranium ammunition works best within a certain range of velocity, so higher velocity won't actually lead to better performance and may actually lead to worse performance when using DU.

This however is not really an issue as increased velocity is not the only way to increase performance.
