Can weapons like the FIM-92A Stinger, or the Javelin launcher be fired without a lock-on, or must that have lock to be fired?

I've always wondered.
>>
>>30461193
The Javelin must be locked to fire. After that, you can do whatever the fuck you want to. Fire and forget, nigga.

I've never used a Stinger, so I have no idea. I imagine it's similar.
>>
>>30461214
Javelin can do direct fire. That's what we did when I went through the school
>>
>>30461214

Makes sense. I guess at 78 grand a missile, you'd want to make sure it's gonna actually do something.

No.
>>
>>30461228
Still need to apply tracking gates and lock on for that my man.
>>
>>30461228

Doesn't direct fire still require a lock though? Cos I know that direct-fire is used for aerial targets, like helicopters, or lightly armored targets and top-down is for tanks and other heavily armored targets.

>Javelin can do direct fire.

That's still a lock-on.

You can't fire the Javelin directly at a target like you can with a rifle, the CLU and the missile are pointed in entirely different directions. When you do direct-fire, you're just telling the missile to "lock on" to a stationary point.
>>
>>30461244

What's the correct term then?

Ignore him, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Wait, disregard this I suck cocks. Forgot the Javelin was fire-and-forget. No wonder they're so pricy. I thought they were just absurdly expensive for SACLOS
>>
>>30461279
Confirmed, I forgot fire and forget ATGMs were a thing.

Anything else you want to know, OP?

I literally have the book.
>>
>>30461287

SACLOS being wire-guided, yeah?
>>
>>30461266
I figured OP meant a lock on to a heat signature
>>
>>30461321

Is it fun to fire?

And how many times can it be fired before you need to recharge the CLU?

Semi-Automatic-Command-Line-Of-Sight
You keep a little eyepiece thingy lined up on the target to guide the missile. As apposed to Manual-Command-Line-Of-Sight, which is just guiding the missile manually via a joystick or somesuch
>>
>>30461344
It's a blast. (pun intended)

Really though, both the Javelin and the Saber system are fun to fire. I was lucky enough to get to shoot both.

The CLU has a battery life of 3-4 hours depending on the temperature.
>>
>>30461387

So it's basically a video game guided launcher. Wow, I always thought that sort of thing was fiction.

>>30461390

Are they really as powerful as you see in the test-fire videos? I remember seeing one where it basically vaporised a tank.

shut the fuck up and go play your video games you annoying little garbage man

It really depends. If you're just shooting a tank hull, you won't see too much. But if you're engaging an actual loaded tank then it can be pretty devastating. The precursor charge causes reactive armor on the tank to detonate and then a main charge penetrated the armor. This basically liquefies anyone inside and can detonate any munitions on board, causing shit on the tank to blow off.
>>
>>30461500

I wonder how it would fare against an Abrams or a Challenger.
>>
>>30461536
I imagine it would do pretty well. Pretty much any modern tank is susceptible to the "top-down" firing style of the Javelin.

wow, just wow, it's like MURRICA is trying to invent new kind of stupid everyday
>>
>>30461702
What are you trying to say?

All I see here is incoherent babbling.
>>
>>30461679

Still would be pretty neat to see the difference. I mean, they mostly seem to use it against fairly old tanks in third world shitholes. Would be interesting to see how it would go against the most advanced armor currently in the field.

>>30461702

Fire and forget is literally fire and get the fuck out of the area.

That's the whole point of it, so you don't have to sit there like a chump and get roasted by the enemy.
>>
>>30461322
Not necessarily. Chink/russian made ATGM uses laser beam while TOW-2 uses radio link
