Which one is better?
The handguards on the A1s were shit, they cracked and the little fins broke off in the field all the time. The A2 sights are more adjustable and better protected.
The A2 is more certainly "better" but the A1 is a more comfortable rifle with the A1 Pistol Grip and shorter stock, and it looks more prolific.

So a1 with round handguards? The a2 elevation was too complicated for soldiers, you have to preset it then zero then reset the srum again. Just a simple flip sight with 2 ranges was so much easier
A2 has a shit barrel profile that was born from literal stupidity and FUCK its stock and grip. It does have better handguards and rearsight though.
A1 looks sexier, weighs a full pound less, and is more comfortable all around. Rear sight is a bit of a pain to work with, and the handguards will crack if you so much as sneeze at them.
An M16A2 with an A1 barrel, A1 grip and A1 stock would be perfect.

The only thing they shoulda changed from A1->A2 was a washer for the rear sight screw to take out all slop, A2 birdcage, A2 lower, Glock polymer for the furniture, and maybe make the barrel thicker and taper from extension to FSB.

Take the handguards, rear sight aperture (just the aperture), front sight post off the A2 and put them on the A1. Then you'd really have something.
The A1 weighs less for a reason - the thicker barrel and carry handle are some of that, but the cheap handguards everyone here is bitching about is part of the reason too.

The A1 is lighter, simpler, and full auto with better sights suited for combat (not ridiculous match sights). It's a purpose built combat rifle, the A2 is a compromise of trying to make a fighting rifle a match/competition rifle and it suffers for it.

I built an A2 clone, and I'm surprised at how light it is compared to multiple 16" ARs I've shot. Cant imagine an A1 weighing 1lb less. I imagine it would be great, I want to built an A1 now but it would feel a little weird having two very similar 20" ARs.
