Home defense or concealed carry?
If your using it for home, get whatever is the most fun, fuck it. you'll be using it as a range Toy barring the extreme unlikelihood that you actually use it to defend your property.

My personal choice would be a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 magnum and a reloading setup.

If you mean cck, something small 38spc is a surprisingly good round, especially with the advanced bullet designs available now.

Ruger gp100 chambered in 357 magnum

I was doing some research, and besides buying a Smith and wesson, this is a reliable, well built gun for a decent price. Sure, it's not the best option for human self defense, but it is a well rounded gun that would be useful against attackers, as well as large game (you'd want 44 mag or bigger for grizzlies and bigger tho)

Consider the Ruger LCR (hammerless) in .357 magnum, snubnosed variety (obviously)

The plastic frame delivers incredibly light weight, the steel barrel delivers suitable accuracy, the trigger is one of the most smooth and generally pleasant I've felt in any double action design, better than the S&W and better than the sig DA triggers I've felt.

I bought a stainless taurus 66 about 4 years ago. Since then, I have put about 10,000 standard pressure 38 specials and ~3500 full tilt 357 mag loads. No issues, no noticeable cylinder wobble or endshake. Rifling still in great shape because I only put about 300 jacketed rounds through the gun. the rest were cast lead. By far, my favorite and most accurate handgun. I would spend the extra $150-200 for a smith or ruger because taurus has some piss poor customer service. My TCP was sent back to them 4 times, many hours wasted on the phone and they failed to notify me for two months once they finally decided to send me a new gun- they needed my ffl info before shipping. So they sent a new tcp with a shittier finish, one less magazine than I sent in and they refused to pay my ffl fee. Over a year before they made it "right". I sold that piece of shit the next day after picking it up from my ffl. kitchen table ffl dealer is real cool and didn't charge me his normal $10 fee.

If money and time to search are not that big a problem I'd recommend a manhurin mr 73 revolver in .357 , it's a French gun now before you laugh hear me out. Lemme give you some history, the French special forces have been using it for many years and it was purpose built to take extremely hot .357 ammo that would kill most revolvers and fire said ammo very regularly and be no less accurate than 1/4" groups at 25 yards. Also GIGN and RAID units in the aftermath of the Paris attacks were using the mr 73 to blow holes in terrorists, in short it's a based revolver, if this explanation ain't enough here's a long ass article about it.

Kind of a niche gun i have:

LCR 3"

>extremely lightweight still due to .38 spl chambering and alloy (.357 LCR's are made with stainless frames) [Weight: 15.7 ounces (empty)]

> 3" barrel and excellent adjustable sights

>Excellent DA, or very light S/A trigger pull

Basically it's really light and easy to shoot but it does have a significant kick over a steel-framed handgun, though it's not unpleasant to shoot.

Functionally I don't think the distinction matters.

What's important is that it's an 8-shot .357, because capacity and reloading under stress are the biggest arguments against revolvers for self-defence.

Some 5rd snubnose revolver. Preferably one that shoots .357 for the extra power and because it can shoot .38spc so you won't be tied down to a single caliber. They can be had cheap at as far as revolvers go and they're fairly compact in size which makes them easy to carry. Just make sure that you check the timing before you buy especially on older used guns.

>Rugers go off if you drop them
Many pre- '80s single action revolvers (not just Rugers) could potentially sheer the seer if you dropped them directly on the hammer and go off like that. Back in the day, cowboys would load their six-shooters with 5 rounds and leave the hammer on an empty chamber before throwing it on their hip all day to prevent this.

You can send your old model revolvers in to Ruger and get a transfer bar put in, or carry on an empty chamber. Any Ruger revolver (and most other brands) made after the mid '80s have a transfer bar built in and are drop-safe.

NO. TERRIBLE IDEA.

357 j-frames are literally capable of breaking your hand.

As long as you only want to shoot .38's, sure, but 357's are almost uncontrollable.

I carry/collect snubbies, and an inexpensive 442/642/ruger lcr are all good, and easy to slip into a pants/jacket/robe pocket.

Eh, that is people jumping on the shit train for taurus in general and in the beginning they were kind of right because .410 gauge shells just didn't really belong in pistols

However after the popularity increased and everything companies started producing .410 ammo that was specifically made for pistols

Get a governor, get a trigger job on it and it's a dream of a carry gun, albeit a very large one

buck in those things is nothing to fuck around with, a single pull of the trigger is enough to put down a few 9mm sized balls of lead into someone
