I've been trying to make an accurate replica of a first world war trench for awhile now.
Pic related is what I've got so far but I wanted to know what you guys think I can do or improvements.
I do plan on making it much deeper (at least 7 feet) with sand bags,barbed wire, and a dugout to sleep in.
All tips are appreciated

you could dig a 15'x6' trench in 20 minutes with a backhoe (if you know how to use it)
otherwise, keep your tools sharp and learn to dig effectively

so far I dug a narrow as fuck hole then expanded to my right with a pickax by hammering down on the sides and digging out the bits that fall apart

What I plan to do is once the trench is finished I dig an EXTRA two feet downwards and the put wooden boards over it so if it rains and floods i can just walk over it all

Did you not read that he suggested to RENT a backhoe- not go out and buy one. You could get a lot of work done in a day even with just a little mini hoe. They run about $150 a day in my area to rent and most places will deliver and pick up the equipment for about $75.

It's a big piece of steel as tall as you are, maybe an inch thick. You mostly use the weight of it to drive it through tough dirt. It's long, so you can then use it as a lever to break up the dirt.
Kind of like a pickax, but MUCH more efficient.
Should be able to find them at any hardware store.

Depends on the size of the crowbar I suppose. If your crowbar is about the size of the digging bar, then it should probably work the same.

Holes are special kind of thing anon. Varies by locale. My area is extremely rocky with boulders in the several hundred pound range a mere few inches below topsoil, but the dirt is high in clay and shapes very well.

It's is literally ducking painful and life threatening if not taken care of. We're talking necrotizing fasciitisof your feet because you stayed too long in your muddy ass trench with all the animal filth in the area slowly collecting in the pooled water.
And on that note, what do you think happens to clay water when it dries? This thing is going to go from a historically accurate vision on a hot dry day to a historically more accurate craphole on a wet day to a pool of sucking clay water begging for you to fuck up and drown in during a real storm. You have to really be smart about where that water goes.
