i wish they'd not do this. i prefer 3 point stake crimping, easier to reload and less material lost when reaming the pocket out. you just remove 3 little points instead of a whole ring of metal.

Nah it's not about the lower, I have a buddy that wants an AR now and I might take that opportunity; I've always liked how the billet looks.

I don't think the MEGA set would fit this handguard; I'm keeping that. I know Geissele users have issues with their handguards on the MEGA upper because of the anti-rotation lock they use, and the Midwest uses a similar system. The Rainier set looks more open around the end of the upper, unlike the MEGA.

I'm pretty set on Rainier's Billet Ambi lower for my new build.

Any recommendations for a Billet upper to match it, or should I get the upper from them as well in the set?
I can't use MEGA's set as their upper doesn't fit right with anti-rotation handguards.

you should ask mega if they know for sure a geissele (or other anti rotation tab equipped hg) wont work.

also be warned most ambi lowers aren't really ambi when it comes to the bolt latch. like 99% of them are 'drop only' bolt catches. you can't lock the bolt back with the button. it's a release only.

I understand that, it's just nice that it's an option; and I like the way that lower works.

People have to file down their handguards to fit MEGA uppers. PLus, I'm not a big fan of their logo anyway.
>>
>>30405962
You really only need a optic mount that will bridge the upper receiver and the rail, the rest is pretty simple to do with a BEV block. They WANT you to buy the "correct" tools, just like an OE car manufacture wants you to buy their special shit to service their components. There is always an innovative workaround.

It's all held together with Loctite 242 or Loctite blue, which can be a motherfucker with heat and age to take apart though.

And then here's my current rifle.

I sold my first rifle for a $200 profit over what I paid for it's parts then turned a rounded and ordered all the parts for my current rifle in a configuration that wasn't quite as retarded as my first iteration. (then the next day some Muslim killed a bunch of gays and that's how I accidentally got ahead of the panic buying of lowers and other bits)

I've got BUIS, Red dot, weapon light, and sling in the mail. Outside of a fee odds and ends like rail covers and that I don't think I'd be in want to add or change anything to this rifle for some time.

Not sure where you heard that, but it's wrong. It has to be designated as a heavy barrel by the manufacturer. In Maryland law, Heavy Barrel (or HBAR) is never actually defined, so whatever barrel a manufacturer designates as a Heavy Barrel/HBAR is a Heavy Barrel/HBAR. Has nothing to do with diameter.

Since you are building your rifle from a lower (making you the manufacturer), you can designate any barrel as your HBAR if you feel like playing that game. You just can't sell it to anyone in that form, but if it's for you, you are designating your own firearm as whatever you want to designate it as. This would comply with Maryland's law, because there is no actual definition of HBAR other than being designated as such from the manufacturer (which is now you).

I'm not old enough to manufacture my own (my grandfather "built" mine and then "sold" it to me as a complete rifle), which is why I don't do my own designation and actually have a Heavy Barrel.

You'll never find any definitive information on the subject other than interpretations of the law, because there isn't any definition. That's why the method I said in >>30406546 is completely valid (an FFL told me this method, and they recommended it). Whatever is designated by the manufacturer as an HBAR, is an HBAR in Maryland law. And assembling a rifle from a lower makes you the manufacturer.

Colt AR15's (and any clones) are banned in Maryland, except for Colt AR-15 Sporter HBAR's. Building an AR with a Heavy Barrel/HBAR is enough to define it as a clone/copycat of the non-banned Colt Sporter HBAR, making it legal here. If it didn't have a "HBAR" it would be banned. But there is no actual definition of what HBAR is.

You CAN mount it as-is, but it will be too low. They sell risers for under $20 in your choice of absolute cowitness (will line up directly with iron sights) or lower third cowitness (dot is a bit above but you can still use your sights through the optic).

Or you could spend as much on a QD mount as you did on the PA-MDS, but they come in the same options.
>>
>>30407208
If it's a mil-spec forging they will literally all be the same. There are seriously only 3 forges in the US currently making AR lower blanks, they all use the same specs (metal, finish, etc), and they all use the same machines.

If you want top-notch, get a billet lower. Yes, they make 80% billet lowers. You (can) get a few cool extras that way, like integrated oversized trigger guard or ambi bolt/mag release.

As to "quality", the only thing that you won't be doing yourself that can impact the function of the rifle is an improperly broached magwell, and I've not heard of that being an issue on any of the 80%'s, even the cheapos.

STOP repeating this STUPID fucking bullshit. forgings are not machined and BARELY resemble a completed receiver part.

the final machining process varies between manufacturer to manufacturer so the tolerances will naturally vary. the methodology used to create the magwell void is also a very widely varied area and the methods vary from drilling out the corners and milling out the space to wire edming the whole thing out in one go.

let this fucking meme die.
