That's neat. I always used less bulky saddle guns, when I carried a saddle gun.
Often just packed a pistol.
When I was younger and working beef, I usually used either a Beretta 92FS or a Ruger Blackhawk and a Stevens 20 gauge when working beef or riding the fence.
When I got older I packed a S&W hand ejector and an SKS for most beef work. I think a double action revolver and a milsurp rifle is pretty much the next evolution.
Trying to get back into that line of work, thinking about buying a big revolver and a levergun.

An AK and 7.62x39 can do neither of those.

Your first assumption was that 5.56 is automatically superior to 7.62x39. That's not universally a true statement, the latter is a devastating cartridge, and even outperforms the former in a few specialized areas such as cover penetration.
