There are very, very few boulders in Texas (where moleman lives).
I live in central Texas and outside of the Hill county to the west, the soil goes down 2-4ft, followed by a dozen or more feet of red clay that looks exactly like OP's hole except it has more gravel mixed in. There is plenty of space to dig down with hand tools, I've dug down 8ft without major difficulty (foundation for a nigger-rigged wind turbine).

I've seen the image from the original thread, and all I could think was that you're the man I wanted to be, if I didn't live in earthquake land where the ground is all clay and sandstone. I have a small area, really just a short tunnel about 6 feet long and about 4 feet high at its best. Not on my property, because I'd like to not have my house cave in every week or so, so no pics, but its nothing to brag about anyways. Expansion is terrible because its not a shovel or a pick even, but chisel and hammer work. Upside is its REALLY goddamned solid. But if I had the dedication and wasn't trying to do other things, I'd make myself a little death-cave in the hillside and last out the apocalypse with the molemen.

1: Shoring / supports. How does one go about doing this? How far apart and how much boards are needed?

Day 2 of my SoCal Moleman/VC tunnel copy. Am trying for the staircase looking Vietcong tunnel on Google. Clay layers with rocks has been slow going but clay might come in useful later to plaster walls. Would like the stairs to go down about 10 feet and then start a tunnel that will go under brick walls and into a hill, so when I start the tunnel it'll reach a depth of about 30 feet almost instantly while only having to dig down my initial 10 down. Then planning to make a roof by digging down around 2 feet and placing buried 2x4s as a roof for much of stairway.
Have any of you guys considered planting some bamboo?
It just seems wrong to label something as Vietcong anything without using bamboo as the primary structural material.
