Just get a shotgun from a pawnshop. Old Remington 870s or Ithica 37s work just fine and won't break the bank. New Mossberg 500s as well. There are probably QC issues with new Remington stuff since the name got bought by somebody else. I bought a new Remington rimfire rifle that was shit.
Personally I have a Benelli Supernova with a 14" barrel but that's gonna cost a lot more and I don't even know if you can have an SBS in NY.

A Mossberg 500 will run you about $300~. You can get a Maverick 88 which is close to the same thing for like $220 or so
