I wish I knew about beating flippers before.

Related note, what lube y'all use for pivots? I currently got slip 2000 and clp, of which I been using clp mainly.

Also looking for a decent titanium lanyard bead, if anyone has recommendations.

I don't know if this is the best place to ask, but I'm looking to buy a Kukri for general innawoods stuff because I don't really feel like carrying both a hatchet and a large knife. I'd like to keep it authentic if possible, but I find it hard to tell which of the places calling themselves Kukri House is the real one. I know about Himalayan Imports, but I don't want to spend more than $75.

I'm pretty sure that all the ones on Amazon claiming to be genuine are either fakes or a gamble with quality. I've also been looking at the Condor heavy duty kukri, which, while it isn't authentic or as special snowflake, seems more trustworthy.
>>
>>30349784
Just stalk the Himalayan Imports subforum on Bladeforums. They sell their non-standard models and blemishes there, so if you wait long enough (and are fast enough to get one before someone else claims the model you want), then you can get one for cheaper than going through their store.

I've never used Condor's choppers before, but they make good machetes and they have a good designer (Joe Flowers) who knows his stuff. A quick google search says he designed the HD kukri, so while it may be inauthentic, it should still be a good blade.

For working with line/rope. A common use and one that use mine many times a day to do is break knots that have been locked far to tight to break with bare hands or crappy knots that are completely jammed; it can be used for many other things as well.

>>
D2 vs. 1095, who wins? Intended uses are opening packages and giving snitches stitches
>>
>>30353969
D2, 1095 will win out if you plan on applying lateral load to the edge or blade but for cutting, D2.
>>
>>30350512
Depends what you like for a folder ? But for my money it's totally worth it. For and finish is good, locks up tight, takes a good edge, slices well, DISSAPEARS in your pocket because of how thin it is.

I usually carry it when I wear dress pants because it's so thin.

Also worth noting, it can easily be flicked open with one hand, in case you prefer one handed operation. I definitely do. One handed closing is a little more tricky but doable.

For the price of those you probably could've bought one decent knife, although now that I''ve gone price checking to get you some links I've noticed that Ontario's basic SP series has gone up in price because the people in charge have dirt for brains.. Still, $40 (USD) for their Kabar clone isn't bad, but you could also get something like a moonshiner from Condor for about $45 and anything from Condor will have a better sheath. Certain items from Schrade and Cold Steel are also not terrible choices as far as cheap stuff goes.

Make sure to price check between places like Amazon and Knifecenter, sometimes one has far better pricing than the other.

Send it back to Benchmade for sharpening because damn that thing needs some TLC. While it's gone, do your research and buy either a Lansky sharpening system or a Spyderco Sharpmaker. Read up on how to use your sharpening system, and how to strop your knife afterwards. Learn how to sharpen with cheap, shitty knives- they'll resharpen faster and you won't fuck up anything of value. By the time your knife gets back you'll be able to properly maintain it from then on.

>>
>>30357021
>>30357010

Never worked at sea but I spent a couple of summers teaching as a scout raft director when I was younger and I carried a wooden marlinspike.

Used it all time, new scouts loved to overtighten poorly tied knots and it was good for breaking them loose. It was also great for splicing rope that was stiff from being exposed to wet and then dried over and over again. We used a lot of natural fiber rope.

OK so I need some help

I wanted to do a little project and fix up an old machete I had lying around. I don't know what steel it was but it's a cheap walmart machete. I stripped off the coating and then polished it a little and dipped it in vinegar to "darken" the blade prior to tossing it in a tumbler. Prior to dipping it in vinegar I wiped it down with alcohol and left in the vinegar for around 20 hours since it wasn't darkening at all. I eventually gave up and pulled it out and wiped it down with alcohol and got this instead.

So my questions are:

>what happened?
>what is this? just a patina? why the oranges and yellows?
>There's no pitting or anything so I assume it's just a patina and not rust despite how it looks on the paper towels
>what do I do now? try ferric acid?
>>
>>30350317
>>30350364
Damn these wouldnhave been perfect when I was still working horses. The spike is for picking rope right? Would have been great on their tail braids and the sheep's food would have mad the risk of cutting the horse minimal if I ever had to cut the tack off of em

D2 is a better edge steel as >>30354035
mentioned. If you want to use your knife for light prying work or batoning (please fucking don't), 1095 wins out as a spring steel.

Also, 1095 is easier to sharpen, but wears an edge quicker.

What's the
point?
>>
>>30356913
It's oddly attractive but I just can't get over those finger grooves. How comfortable is it? Also what model?
>>
>>30357015
I have one, but in the grey G10. G10 is a superior handle material, even if the Dymondwood looks nice.

The S30V is a nice, gritty cutter, and rips through fibers like crazy. Hasn't needed a sharpening since I bought it, just some honing. I don't use it for skinning though, just cutting paper, boxes, rope, etc.

It has a sturdy lock and if properly lubricated, a clean and smooth opening. It can get gunked up in the spring lock assembly, and you have to get in there with some oil and like a pencil-tip or something to pull the lint out.

I don't like tip-up pocket carry, I opened up my thumb when the blade got snagged on a loose thread and opened in my pocket.

It's a good EDC though, I carry it most days. It has a low profile for work too, for those bitchboy asshat coworkers who fear tools.

The marlinspike is for undoing knots, most modern mariners have metal crimping their unsecured knots together and don't need to be retied.
This is literally marketed towards 1st time boat owners who reuse nylon ropes.

>>30344642
Thoughts on Damascus steel folders? Is it worth a damn? Are there any under $100 that aren't just gimmicky crap? Legitimate question....
>>
>>30364186
Folders generally don't exceed 5" in blade length and damascus steel is only useful in blades longer than that. You're better off with a modern supersteel for the job you need the folder to do. And no, don't pay more than $100 for a folder unless it's a collection piece, a Benchmade or a Spyderco.
>>
>>30364222
get out of here with your "only bm and spyderjew are worth spending over $100". there are leagues of manufacturers whose products compete rightfully with bm and spydercuck.

should not spend more than a hundred on a folder. I'm completely aware of other companies making good quality knives that can compete with the more expensive makers, all I said was that it's safer to spend that kind of money on renowned companies.

How did I do /k/? I just got this knife a few days ago. I bought it off a nice old man for $25. Its a CRKT and I don't think they are sold anymore.
>>

I'm not familiar with CRKT models, but I hear their folders are decent and at $25 for a nice looking little knife, I'd say not bad. Long as you're happy with it

I am actually. The waifu just lost my dragonfly 2 I had so this was a welcome edition. Its an icho something design and it's assisted opening with a tension rod screwed inside it. I haven't seen a knife like it and I really dig the taiwan 1070 steel.

For what purpose?

For general innawoods with a similar TOPS aesthetic, I'd recommend Ranger or ESEE.

Ontario Knife Company also makes licensed versions of the Rangers and the RATs (RAT was ESEE's original name and the OKC versions are still branded that way). The fit and finish of OKC and the warranty may not be as good, but they are otherwise pretty much identical to the nicer but pricier versions.

I'm not sure if there's a right answer for that question but I'll say this, For the price you generally get better materials for less money going with spyderco. Can you find another company that has a knife thats usa made in g10 with s110v steel for only $135

I'm okay with this. Large folder for tough tasks or self defense, small folder for the finer details. Benchmade and Spyderco working together, that's a sight to see.
>>
>>30375989

So since you have the zip tie mod you wave it open from your pocket? Is it the one that is clipped furthest to the outside of your pants then? If so, where do you keep your benchmade?
>>
>>30376075
It's not set up for the "wave" style of opening. I actually keep it in my back left "ass" pocket. I use the mini zip tie as a thumb stud. Benchmade stays in my front right pocket like any other standard right handed edc.

For the small size of the dragonfly, I find it easier to open with a stud/zip tie rather than the hole. I have another in H-1 that I kept plain.

Mad that I'm not using the precious spider hole like it was designed?

I don't give a flat-rate fuck.

It's a small knife. It's easier to open with the stud/zip tie unless you have babby hands.

>>
>>30376240
Is the gimping more aggressive on the H1 version or is that my imagination
>>
>>30376376
Yes. All the "Salt" models are in H-1.
>>30376377
The gimping is the same on both of my examples; vg10 and h1. Being a mass produced knife, I imagine they vary a bit from knife to knife, but not by much. At least I can't tell a difference.

To add, I just can't believe the prices on these things these days. I bought 3 dragonflies on bladehq maybe 3-4 years back- VG10 was around $35, a little more for the H1, and like $60 for the stainless "tattoo" special edition (for the girlfriend).

Nowadays, your big box stores will push a standard black vg10 dragonfly for $70+. Insane for what it actually is.

But for real i'm pretty sure the zipties are more for a makeshift Emerson pocket opener, I see guys doing it on the bigger spyderco knives.

I could see how you'd use one as a thumbstud but it really doesn't seem like it's worth it because the spiderhole works fine, at least for the ones I have. I don't have a delica or dragonfly though
>>
>>30376478
>Nowadays, your big box stores will push a standard black vg10 dragonfly for $70+. Insane for what it actually is.

Spyderco's MAP is 40%. A Dragonfly 2's MSRP is $90. Taking 40% off gives a street price of $54, which is about what most online knife retailers sell it as. According to the internet archive from Knifecenter and BladeHQ, the Dragonfly 2 sold for about $50 in 2012. So prices only rose about 4 dollars.

tl;dr
The big box stores are being stupid.

Like I said above, it's a very small knife. Opening it with one hand requires you to awkwardly wrap your fingers around the tiny handle and use a straight thumb to open. Hard to explain. Obviously you could open it with two hands easily, but what's tacticool about that?
>hurr durr

I'll try to show a photo of how I open it, but first, a size comparison to a standard band-aid to show how small it actually is unopened-

Sorry for the odd angle. Figured it was the only way to show how awkwardly wrapped around your fingers have to be.

So as you can see, unless you have some type of palsy, it's just odd. Hence my argument for the stud/zip tie mod.
>>
>>30376478
How's the steel? What can you tell me about its performance and so on?
>>
>>30376659
Seeing as to how I like to baby my Benchmade Contego (since it was about 4x the price of the vg10 dragonfly when I bought it) I tend to use the dragonfly a lot more than the larger knife I pair it with.

That being said, it takes abuse a small knife of that nature probably shouldn't take... Beating on it repairing cars, cutting heavier materials, etc...

The VG10 holds up well, no glaring rust or anything. Blade has a few nicks in it, but again, from hard use.

The H-1 holds up extremely well to wet conditions as it should. I cycle it in in place of the vg10 during winter (Michigan, US). Edge hasn't been dinged up as much due to using the vg10 more. Seems alright for what it is.

Again, you have to realize that regardless of steel type, it's still a very small amount of it. I don't personally like the idea of the ZDP-189 version of the dragonfly simply because a knife of that size doesn't necessitate the use of some expensive wonder-steel (aside from the collecting standpoint).
All up to you if you want to spend $100+ on a knife that size.

It's a ziptie, prolly less than $5 for a pack at Wally World, and after you're done modding the knife you get to use the rest as ghetto handcuffs if a drug deal goes bad amirite?

In all seriousness, I guess it could be either way. I mean it's just a ziptie and if you're like the guy with the dragonfly he has 2 of them so it's not a big deal to have one like normal and one modded. It's probably kinda pointless on the bigger ones but either way, it's a ziptie. If it works it works. Anyway I was just busting your balls for making such a salty comment by responding with one of my own. This is /k/ where civilized people go to fight with proper weapons, it's not /b/. We're all cool here.
>>
>>30376628
>>30376653
You could always use the Spyder-drop technique.

You hold it by the blade and flick the handle downwards so it opens, and the re-adjust to a proper grip.

>>30376659
Not him, but in my experience, VG10 is a good jack-of-all-trades stainless.

H1 is for all intents and purposes rust proof. There are a few pictures of them having rust on them, but most of those were confirmed as residue or other rusting material that got stuck on the blade and proceeded to rust.

Edge retention is plain edge isn't great, but it has great edge retention in serrated due to the work-hardening property of the steel.

The sharpmaker is more for touch ups as the stock rods don't include a really coarse option.

The average person who needs a sharpener has knives that are already fucked up to the point where a medium stone would take forever.

I had one of those $4 knives for about 6 months before I lost it. definitely worth the $4, maybe $15 if you see the shit S&W sells. I wanted to try out the general blade shape which took some time to get accustomed to.

Spyderco sells diamond and CBN rods for the sharpmaker. The key to using the diamond stones (in general) is to use light pressure. As the diamonds are plated on to the stone, if you press too hard, you'll strip the diamonds out of the stone.

Many people go too hard because they want their knife to be stop being so dull, but then they strip all the diamonds out of the stone. This leads to the stone not sharpening anymore, and then the person wonders why their knife isn't getting sharper.

If you already have a Sharpmaker, a cheap option would be to attach some coarse sandpaper to your medium or fine rods with some binder clips or tape. Strop the edge (aka reverse the sharpening motion so you're dragging the edge backwards instead of cutting with the edge forward).

If you don't have a Sharpmaker, I'd just skip it entirely (and I own one) and just learn how to git gud at hand-sharpening with your standard water or oil stones.

Sharpmakers are better for people who don't really care about learning to sharpen the most efficient way and just want an easy way to sharpen, since all you need to do is just hold the knife straight up or down. Sharpening on water or oil stones takes more time to learn, but you can eventually reach a point where you're good enough to sharpen with just about anything.

You got a Clinch pick and a trainer for less than a $100? Pretty good deal.

Good stuff anon.

You might as well torrent Southnarc's tapes while you're at it.

start grinding from the top.

Had one of these but gave it to my mom

Have a Kershaw Leek because I wanted a sharp tip for cutting blister packages open

apparently the steel in the Leek is better than average for a knife in its price range so there's that to consider too

Yeah. Unfortunately I have the older sheath with the tek-lok which prints like a motherfucker. Thinking about Dark Star Gear or Keeper's Concealment for a replacement. The trainer also came with a PHLster sheath which I can't stand, it takes a retarded amount of force to draw the knife and it blocks my index finger from actually getting on the handle to help me rip that shit out.
>>
>>30358643

that's bad ass looking
>>
>>30386142
You can use a heat gun or a hair dryer to heat up the sheath and work the knife in and out of it to make the fit looser. I'd tape the edge though because kydex can dull an edge.
>>
>>30386185
Yeah, that sheath is dedicated to the trainer cause it's red, don't want to accidentally get them mixed up. Thinking about doing that and/or taking a dremel to some of the excess material.

they dont sell lightning otfs on amazon anymore, at least for me

An anon said something about an edge guide, can I use one of those? What kind of stone should I get then. I wanna be able to make my knives razor sharp
>>
>>30386013
How would I got about doing this? I have little knowledge of knifes I just find it a shame to leave it like that.
>>
>>30386237
Edge guides can be helpful since maintaining a consistent angle when freehand sharpening is pretty important.

For basic learning, I'd recommend a Norton Crystolon combo stone. You can get other stones to polish further, but when you're starting out, it's best to keep it simple, since there's a shitload of sharpening stones out there and they can get expensive/complicated.

Look at videos from guys like Cliff Stamp or Murray Carter. While Cliff can be kind of arrogant, he makes good points.
>>
>>30383848
And you're objectively retarded
>>
>>30386458

I'm pretty shit at keeping my angle so I should maybe use one of those.

My knives don't see very heavy use so I don't know how coarse of a grit I would need

I found one on the ground at my work, fell in love with immediately even though I've only ever carried Case/old fashioned pocket knives. I never cared for more modern knives till pic related changed my mind

That Amazon link is the exact one that I bought, and they sent me pic related.

Just got it yesterday, not nuts about the handles but the spring assist opening is neat as fuck for never having a knife with it before.

Anyone have any experience with QuarterMaster knives? Worth the price?
>>
>>30386967
I hate that they send a belt sheath with a boot knife. Pretty much the only reason I haven't bought one of these yet.
>>
>>30387812
I wonder why the pic is fucked then.
