European here and I want to start conceal carrying a knife. I was wondering if there was a type of handle available that you can just clip onto the waistband of your trousers?
>>
>>30320429
I have all sorts of knives other than Spyderco, just don't understand the hate. They're willing to produce designs and use uncommon materials even when they're not likely to make a ton of money. At this point I'm sure everyone has acquiesced to your flawless logic and solid facts regarding what is shit and what is not so you can surely go do something more productive with your time.
>>
>>30320460
Not really a handle type but yiu can get knives with pocket clips. Little metal clips on the side of the handle that just slide onto your pants pocket, or if you like, the waistband. It gives it some stability to just hang there for when you need it, but t gets in the way of handling the knife when it comes to work. Sometimes they're easily removable and some knives don't even have them. Depends on the knife really

I'm probably going to get a spyderco Dragon fly or something smaller for general cutting purposes. But I'm a big fan of the idea of carrying an easily deployable knife to get an attacker off of you in case he is going for your gun.

Being that I'm in CA fixed blades are illegal but folders of any size are not. What does /k/ think of muh tacticool assisted opener CRKT Hissatsu?

Guys, I'm thinking of buying a karambit style folder with one of those catches so that it deploys straight out of the pocket if needed.
I've narrowed it down between these two
>Blade-Tech Riptide Karambit
>Fox 479 Black G10 Folding Karambit

Could someone tell me which is better? I've seen people shitting on both of them online But both seem highly rated, I'm leaning toward the riptide because I like that little recurve towards the end.

That hand in the pic is mine, I recently aquired my folder. I really like the fixed version. I typically dont like weeb stuff but I have a soft spot for the Hissatsu from CRKT.

Its an assisted opener, it has a spring inside so that shit flies out effortlessly. It's not meant to be used as an EDC knife. Purely a defensive knife. Which is why I'm also looking for a tiny spyderco that can fit in my watch pocket.

Have experience with a spyderco Dragon fly 2? That's what I'm thinking about

Wusthof (non Gourmet) or Henkels (non International)

everything else is shit. Personally I like the way Wusthof classic looks and feels in hand better than Henkels. However, the fuller tends to get in the way when dicing, so their Le Cordon Bleu line would probably be ideal, but I cant get over their fuckhuge logo on the side. A Classic extra-wide 6" would probably suit the title of 'Best versatile kitchen food processing knife" available, and only costs ~$70. And MAKE SURE you get it from an Authorized Retailer and keep your original receipt, that way if anything were to go wrong, like in 5-10 years your black wood-like handles develop hair-cracks near the rivets, you can take advantage of their lifetime warranty and get a free replacement from Wusthof.
>>
>>30320856
Cold steel also has a kitchen line
>>
>>30320657
>small blade

Clearly it was mentioned what it's for. Never was it said anyone was planning to fence with it. For the purpose of getting an attacker off you so you can draw your gun without risking being disarmed, even a blade half that size would do.

Mora. The sharpening is idiot proof because of the wide bevel, they cost less than 15 bucks, and even though they're 3/4 tang, you can still baton with them. The Scandi grind is excellent for carving, too. Not too big a deal if you break it or lose it, either, since they're so cheap. Get a Companion instead of a Clipper. The tang is longer and they're just more sturdy.

The 0450 is great. Good choice. Really only two issues:
1. The blade centering can get a bit off when you flip it. You can just tighten it back, but it is somewhat annoying. I've heard of this issue with most of the newer ZTs.
2. If you put pressure on the lock bar, the detent will become extremely hard to overcome, and the knife will only flip out if you put a lot of force into the flipper. And since the 0450 is pretty slim, you'll have to put your hands on someplace other than the lockbar to have it flip out.

Dad just bought a 940 on a whim to replace his well used mini grip tanto

Gotta say I'm pretty jealous. It's a solid knife.
>>
>>30321889
I ordered the new 940-2 earlier today myself as I've allways liked the blade and shape of the 940 but was put off by the aluminium handles.
Now that it's available in G10 it was a no brainer and I had to get one.
>>
>>30321726
I have heard about both of these issues. I was meaning to ask if loctite or an equivalent would suffice at holding the pivot in place.

Not so much worried about the locker situation as my only frame lock was a boker nano and that thing is tiny.

Thank you for the help!
>>
>>30321733
No problem. The rat can handle a shit load of abuse. The persistence is decently sized and comfy and the one I forgot to mention, also Spyderco is the ambitious, which is slightly smaller than the persistence, if you feel that it's too big.

Correct me if I'm wrong here. But I'm under the impression any knife after 2 weeks of cutting shit up in a warehouse will dull.

If anything that's a testament to the quality of steel from the Swiss knife. You have to resharoen knives buddy.

I will admit though I don't know too much about steel and it's edge retention qualities. For all I know a good knife is supposed to last you a whole year without need for sharpening.
>>
>>30321505
Just get a box cutter god damn
>>
>>30322369
Aye but one of those would bankroll 3's for the rest of your live and your kids lives.
>>
>>30320905

Dragonfly II is probably the the best-designed knives I've ever owned. It's tiny, fits anywhere, offers a grip superior to knives of twice its size and weight, and is one hell of a cutter. Only time I ever *need* to carry a larger pocketknife knife is when I have to do yard or field work.

>>30322392
Lot of variables. Toughness and wear resistance are separate factors- a wear resistant "super" steel that holds an edge for a long time (M390, CTS 204P, CPM 20CV, ZDP-189) is often not that tough- meaning it'll cut abrasive material for a long time, but will chip or break rather than rolling or deforming should it hit something hard- say, a staple, or another piece of metal. High toughness steels (1095, 52100, 3V) will lose their razor edge after a comparatively small amount of use, but they'll roll or deform rather than chipping, and touching them up can be achieved with a few passes on a sharpening stone or a strop.
>>
>>30322512
Although 3V holds an edge cutting abrasives for a loooot longer than 1095 or 52100

Yeah the aluminum handles make it feel solid but I don't really like how the texture of anodized aluminum feels in my hand. Still very jealous of his knife though. I just use the knife blade on my Leatherman mostly. I don't use a knife often enough to justify much more than that as anything other than a fashion accessory. He uses his constantly though, and it shows on his mini grip.

Jap knives are hardened ~10HRC more than german knives. While this may allow the edge to be ground to 11deg instead of 17deg, its absolutely fucked if you hit bone or another cooking utensil, not to mention it is a bitch to sharpen. Those knives are meant for light cutting of soft material, such as fish and vegetables, being washed separately, and then hung onto their own personal knife rack to dry.

I personally dont like that for a GP kitchen knife. If I want stupidsharp for cutting something perfectly, I'll bust out the scalpel. Otherwise I want a workhorse that isnt gonna get a nice chip/gouge in it if I throw it in the dishwasher and a dish keeps rocking into it.
>>
>>30320337

>>
>>30322855
How are you going to slice a tomato or get a perfect cut on an expensive tenderloin with a scalpel?
>>
>>30323075
You dont for a tomato. But for the meat you can. However, that wusthof will take care of everything just fine. I'm trying to say that too hard/brittle a knife is a thing. Wusthof tends to balance all factors optimally.

Mainly EDC, possibly innawoods. Basically expensive letter/box opener about 80% of the time tho. Looking into Spyderco. Centofante, Endura is what I've seen that gets good reviews so far. Any other suggestions for other brands, specific models? Doesn't have to be straight-up folder, assisted and automatics are also legal in my state.

Look into getting a carbidized knife.

While it won't get shaving sharp (at least without a ton of difficulty), it'll slice cardboard for days. The softer steel wears away faster than the carbide, so you almost get a self-sharpening effect.

A decent dual grit water stone should meet most tasks for around 10-25 bucks depending km brand. Lanky sharpeners can usually be had off the internet for under 50.

Smith's has a triple and a pull through, both for around 20 bucks.

Personally I like water stones the most as it let's me set what I feel is the best edge. Pull through are okay, but tend to take metal with them, shortening the life of the blade.

Check amazon. There's also a very well made one I can't remember for the life of me. It's dual sided and shifts as you slide your knife along the honing block to maintain angle easier. Well maybe somebody else will remember.
>>
>>30324325
All sharpening systems work by removing metal
>>
>>30323922
Is not bad, I mean it's definitely not uncomfortable, worst it seem be a littllle slick when wet it your stabbing something(?), but it has good thumb grooves/jimping
>>
Be honest with me /k/, is it stupid to carry a knife for self-defense?
>>
>>30324449
The only time you should carry a knife for self defense is in a place where you can't carry a firearm or as a backup to a firearm or as a tool you use for EDC that can also be used to stab something. Pepper spray would probably be better to make a quick getaway frankly. And if they're so high that the pepper spray doesn't phase them, then they won't be bothered by some slashes either.
>>
>>30324403
No shit bud. Pull through tend to remove more than what's really necessary. At least the Smith's pull through does. With water stones it's not quite as noticeable and easier to fix small nicks due to the fill that occurs.
>>
>>30324325

Waterstones are good, but tend to rust a high carbon blade. I prefer oilstones, but those are much more messy than waterstones.
>>
>>30325126
Fair enough. Any polarized you'd recommend? Been meaning to try one out. Also what do you use for a placemat/work area. For water stones I use an old shemagh that's taken a beating.

For EDC, get her a slim folder, like a Spyderco Dragonfly or Centofante

A knife is arguably your most important tool for innawoods.

Why would you want to skimp on it?

Because a lot of it is overpriced dick sucking shit like benchmade and emerson

So I got gifted a knife, and it doesn't seem to be very sharp out of the box. How should I go about sharpening it? It's a non-folding knife.

Have a look at the CS Master hunter or SRK in 3V, the Fallkniven S1 is essentially copied from the SRK and the VG-1 SRK and VG-10 S1 are made in the same factory. The 3V versions are significantly better outdoor knives IMO though.

Sup /k/

Going to jew york with my girlfriend for a month. What is a basic "gtfo me" knife?

Is there any difference in quality and durability between the CS Master hunter and SRK 3V? The CS is cheaper but I want to know if it's cheaper in price or quality.

Don't listen to that guy.

He's an autistic Cold Steel shill.

They're made in the same place, the SRK will be more durable, it's grind pattern is a fair bit different to the Master hunter which is geared more toward cutting and less toward abuse.

If you compare a Master hunter to an F1 or an SRK to an S1 you're paying significantly more for a knife made in the same place(vg-1 v vg-10) with slightly different steel, the same handle material and different sheathes, make what you will of the sheathes, you can get the Fallknivens in plastic or leather and the CS in plastic only. The steels on the VG knives give edge holding to the Fallkniven and toughness to the CS but the 3V versions will hold an edge on par with VG-10 but are significantly tougher at the cost of corrosion resistance.

That's a solid argument there anon

britbong here, because of shitty laws I can only carry a foldable non-locking sub 3" blade.

thinking of getting the opinel no5 as a daily for opening boxes, cutting paracord ect...

what should I know and can anyone recommend anything else?
>>
>>30339566
Can't go wrong with Opinels, they're great budget edc knives
Also, I read of a Britanon who EDC'ed a Spyderco UKPK, which was designed for your unfortunate UK knife laws, maybe check that out too

>the Fallkniven S1 is essentially copied from the SRK

And the SRK was copied from a knife pattern that goes back decades.

>VG-1 SRK and VG-10 S1 are made in the same factory
But that's wrong.

I agree the general pattern is basically a historic pattern, it shares a lot with the likes of Ka-bars and other survival pattern knives but you're claiming the fact that Fallkniven was originally a CS distributor has nothing to do with the fact that Fallkniven knives use almost the same materials, share production facilities and have a series of knives which damn near mirror a similar series from CS who was producing them a decade earlier in both Japan and the US?

Thoughts on marfione and microtech?
