Detail on wand
>>
>>30330678
how many check valves do you have on it?
>>
>>30330683
Also it has a reduction nozzle on the end now for extra range.

Tests with water go about 20-25 yards
>>
>>30330678
Isn't this illegal? I feel like I've heard building flame throwers is illegal.
>>
>>30330697
Legal in 48 of the 50 US states. Including cucked illinois where I live
>>
>>30330705
Holy shit, fuck yeah. I'm so used to hearing about laws getting bat shit fucking stupid that I forget we still have freedoms.
>>
>>30330686
Uh, zero? Pressure is pretty high, only gas in the system is CO2. Check valve would cause a pretty big pressure drop too. I know the military ones have them but there isn't too much of a point. Especially with diesel since it won't even flash at room temperature
>>
>>30330715
if you say so

i'm not the one whos gonna use it
>>
I hope those welds hold up

Im not very knowledgeable in welding so whatev

Record a gif so you can be immortalized
>>
>>30330850
The only welds I did are on the backpack and the outlet from the fuel tank. Pressure tested them with water to 120 psi already
>>
>>30330933
Soapy water test?
>>
>>30330839
Hes good. This is the most solid build on /k/ yet.
Its impossible for liquid diesel to ignite in CO2. Its not gas and compressed air.
My favorite is kerosene propelled with sweet lady propane. Both non-self oxidizing fuels and propane runs @ 100+ psi, so it acts as propellant, O2 displacement and pilot light fuel in one. This reduces bottles and weight.
You can even freeze the liquid fuel tank and transfer propane into the same container (takes a refill adapter hose) making a one off warfer packed in a single tube.
>>
>>30330994
Not soapy but probably ten tests with water and zero leaks. Held pressure for like a half hour with no noticeable drop before I let the pressure out
>>30331068
This guy fucking gets it. Thanks for the props too
>>
OP here. Hate to have to bump but I found a cracked weld and had to redo it. Cracked on one of the square tube that holds the co2 tank to the frame.

More pics soon, will give building details if y'all want. CO2 tank is full now though so I just need to find a good place to test it.
>>
>>30332332
Don't know much about fire throwers, but how do you prevent fuel from igniting through the nozzle and to your tank?
>>
>>30332370
Should've read the thread buddy. CO2 and diesel need an oxidizer to ignite and there is none in the tank or nozzle assembly since they are filled with, well, CO2 and diesel.
>>
>>30332396
Edit: CO2 won't ignite at all actually. It's a fire retardant.
>>
>>30331178
Proper testing involves pressurising while submerged.
You measure the amount of water displaced between empty and pressurised and then can tell how much your essel is flexing. If it's swelling too much you run the risk of fatigue and rupturing.
Since your tank looks like an air compresor tank it should be good to 150# or so. Normal burst point of those is around 500#. For comparison the US military flame throwers ran up to 300# with a burst pressure of 500#, much less safety margin.
Maty also want to look into a proper front valve wand as well. Keeps from dripping fuel between shots. There's nothing like soaking your toes then dropping some flame.
>>
What's the legality of building one of these?
>>
>>30330705

Idiot.
>>
>>30332650
Other than on the top of your head. Do you have a point? Or are you excitedly sharing your new vocabulary word?
>>
>>30332650
Did you even bother to look up the law? Or did you just never bother learning to read?
>>
>>30332498
Legal in 48 states. Some municipalities ban them.

They're legal because farmers and pest control use them a lot. Farmers use them to clear brush and fight wildfires, pest control use them to fry wasps and bees.
>>
>>30333170

Cool. Thanks.

I imagine they're fairly hard for the average idiot to build. Can you buy them commercially?
>>
>>30333200
Yes. They're pretty expensive though. ~$2000
>>
>>30330678
did you put a rod in the middle of the barrel?
i heard that that helps to make the fuel flow more laminar and less whirly, thus giving it more range before it disperses
>>
>>30330683
Got a lathe?

Turn you something better.
>>
>>30333283
No lathe sadly, had to make do with poorfag harbor freight welding stuff too. Wish I had one though
>>30333246
I didn't hear that so no rod, tried to step the nozzle diameter down gradually to make it have a similar effect. In any case I'd say 20-25 yards not too bad

you should watch the videos on forgotten weapons or inrange tv (not sure which one) about the different flame throwers that where in frequent use

>>
>>30333363
used machinery is actually pretty easy to come by if you ask the small machine shops around your area

I would probably look at the business end of a cutting torch for inspiration, possibly even adapt one for use with the flamethrower.
>>
>>30333393
they go into some of the important or useful design elements on that
>>
>>30333235

What does it typically cost to build one yourself?
>>
>>30333402
Holy shit
>>
>>30333407
Well the real issue I think is I don't have much extra space in the shop for a lathe. I like the cutting torch idea though, when I built a half decent wand for it I'll definitely look into that.
>>
>>30333446
>>30333450
OP here. It cost me around $350. But I already had all the tools I need. Which for the record is a portable bandsaw, an angle grinder, a welder of some kind, and a pipe tap for where the outlet connects to the tank. Various other small hand tools too.

And I appreciate the holy shit bud

>>30333476

Cool, thanks for the info.

How long did it take you to build yours?
>>
>>30333561
I worked on it for about three weeks, probably every other day after work and quite a bit over the weekends. If I had to guess I'd say probably 20 hours total but I bet I could do it in three or four now because a lot of that time was dicking around with the design and having to return stuff to home depot
>>
>>30333595

Neat.

Thanks for sharing, I learned a few things today.

No problem bud. I thought all the flamethrowers people have plans for and use on YouTube look super lame so I designed my own. No regrets.

Also nice dubs
>>
>>30330697

Actually everything is illegal

This is America

You didn't think you were free or something, did you?
>>
>>30333383
That's pretty dope
>>
>>30334493
Thanks friend. I'm beginning to think I should've taken lots more pics and made a how to
>>
>>30332650
Fuck off, Anon.
>>
>>30330678

Hey, that looks nice besides the "wand."

I've been thinking of making one myself as a Florida friendly OC device.

Are you using gasoline?
What are you using as your thickener?
>>
>>30333402

Better pic of the whole thing, please?
It's fucking awesome.
>>
>>30331068

Can you propel an gasoline suspension with a 5000psi oxygen tank or will it just blow up in your face?
>>
>>30333476
I saw an infograph a while back on how to make one with a butane canister, a caulking gun, and an electric igniter. Granted, it has an effective range of about 5 feet. I imagine a decent one costs actual money.
>>
>>30334802
You're welcome to try it friend. I want to be outside the blast radius when it strikes back into the tank.
>>
>>30334927

Why would it go to the tank anymore than when you're welding?
>>
>>30334769
Diesel, no thickener for now. Needs more testing, I'll modify that as needed.
>>
>>30334941
Because when you weld oxygen and acetylene mix inside the torch. You don't just pour a bunch of liquid acetylene (which I'm pretty sure is impossible already) in a tank and pump oxygen through it.
>>
>>30334942

Diesel seems like it would burn too slow for protection, if that's even what you intend to do with it.

What kind of tank are you using?

I've been thinking of using a propane tank for my fuel.
>>
>>30334983

I would intend on using a carburetor or sorts.

But still, how could it ignite anything beyond the torch?
>>
>>30334984
Well the lads on YouTube seem to be doing fine with diesel, but like I said it needs more testing.

The fuel tank is an air tank from harbor freight with a steel pipe threaded and welded into the bottom. Pressure tank is a 5 lb CO2 tank
>>
>>30335021
Testing and usage are quite different.
You'd probably have to cook somebody pretty quick for it to be a useful anti-personnel weapon.

What have you burnt with it so far?

>>
>>30335056
Well I finished building it this morning so nothing yet. I have done lots of tests with just the pressure bearing parts shooting water to eliminate leaks, I'm still trying to find a place for a live fire test.
>>
>>30335148
How heavy is it op?
>>
>>30335157
Not that I could find. Whatever.
>>
>>30335168
I haven't weighed it but it's hefty. My guess is 30 to 40 pounds empty, probably double that with fuel. Than again the m2 weighed about that much
>>
>>30335208

Good lord, that's quite a bit of weight.

How many gallons is your tank?
>>
>>30335241
5 gallons, but I don't want to have it all the way full. I'm thinking 3.5 gallons will be enough
>>
>>30335396
Are you sure that you'll have enough pressure towards the end of the tank?
