Optional navy cover that few I knew bothered with, so we didn't have any colorful nicknames for it.

One word: Aerodynamics.
>>
In all srsness, air forces use it because they can go from wearing it around a base to being able to slip it into a pocket when headed onto the flightline or vice-versa. When you're in the military (and therefore need to salute everywhere / wear a cover outdoors) but spend a lot of time indoors, it's just really convenient.

russian is Pilotka i know
pronounced "Pee-lowt-kaa"

it's "calot" in french (pronounced "kalo").

Wedge.
>>
It's a flight cap, mix of tradition and that they're easy to stow (stick into your belt) if you need to remove your cover.
>>

You fucking idiot. Thats called an FS cap in nz. The lemon squeezer is the army service dress hat which is like a widebrim with a four-way folded top which makes it literally look like a lemon squeezer
>>
>>30325220

Suikka in Finnish. Once it was popular with all service arms in here, now mostly used in Navy, where it enjoys popularity as somewhat of a status symbol (apparently more worn and dirty it is the better, since it is used as unofficial indicator for length of service career).

I'm looking for the quote, but an Austro-Hungarian officer before the first world war learned a lot about language thanks to the cap.

He'd watch as the caps were handed out to a group of men. After a while one guy would flap it open and closed while saying the word as the other guys laughed.

In that manner he learned how to say cunt in all the different languages of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

M38 Garrison cap.
>>
>>30325220

We call it a "Kippie" in the Canadian Air Force Cadets.

And it's because the U.K. used them, so every ex-colony does so.

America variant is known as the 'Overseas Cap'
