Every attack helicopter is welcome
The Alpha XH-1, prototype of the South African Rooivalk.

Eventual form.
I like to believe the guys who fly these are crazier than the Kiowa pilots. They're basically flying an egg into combat.
Early Mil Mi-24. Anyone know what model?

Both bush wars.. Different places and different enemies.
>>30318094
It could also be from the South African Border War aka Angolan Bush War.
All those African conflicts have a dozen different names.

OH-6 Cayuse, the predecessor to the little bird was flown in Nam by some crazy guys, unfortunately most of these stories are lost to the conflict.
>>30318066
>>30318081
Mi-24A, only those had the large slab-sided windows plus the NSVT instead of the Yak-B
>>30318099
This is only in use in the D variant, the A used a normal NSVT and I believe later variants went with some 23 or 30mm weapons. Still, a 12.7mm Gatling gun is awesome.

I got lots more photos of that helicopter in action along with other military hardware from South Africa. I was at the 2016 South African military week and shoot about 3000 photos.

Question: do you know if the towed cannon is a g5 or g7? The g7 has been in the pipeline for a while but I can't find any info on whether it is active now.
>>30322290
Saw this in a previous thread. Cheers though.
>>30318044
Every attack helicopter you say
>>30322302
I do not know. My guess is that's it a g5. South Africa has really cut back on it's military spending. The Saab jets are barely flown and only half the fleet is flight ready. Much of what the SANDF is using is stuff that was built/designed pre-1994.
>>30318044
But what if i haven't fully embraced my attack helicopter orientation.

>>30322324
True, although at least the Caspers appear to slowly be replaced or sold off. I don't know why but I've always thought of them as an eye-sore (probably their iconic image during township protests back in Apartheid).
>>30322354
More from my unit. I'm a Kiowa guy but I have a thing for the BBHs
>>30322358
They were years ahead of their time and yes the SAPS has been selling them off under strict buyer conditions. SANDF still has them in service and the Mamba APC is used all over the world.
>>30320420
I have a whole novel dedicated to the development of the Cobra and it's use in Vietnam. The first half of the book is focused on the Cayuse and Huey Gunships
>>30318110
To be fair the South African Border War is referred to as the "border war", I have never heard it called the "bush war".
>>30322437
South Africans commonly refer to the border wars at the bush wars. I've never heard of it referred to as the border wars by anyone in South Africa or from South Africa.
>>30322383
Care to share the title of the novel?
>>30318081
wish Zvezda made the very early Hind variant instead of making one of the pre D series
>>30322605
I am South African and Afrikaans as well. Never heard it called that, it's always border war and grens oorlog. Not saying you didn't hear that term but it's not official.
>>30322752
I think he's talking about Squadron's Gunships in Vietnam,so one of these two and if not is another one that I have somewhere inside the box beneath them
>>30322845
Go to any bargain books and you'll find half a dozen books on the shelf that refer to the conflicts as bush war. Better yet, got to any M.O.T.H and see what those guys call it.

>>30322898
The only thing in that link that states what you are claiming is a sentence claiming it being commonly referred to as the bush war.
None of the books there use it in their titles. They use the border war. it seems to be well kept secret.
