What was it about this bird that allowed its pilots to rack up kill tallies that numbered into the hundreds?

Shooting mostly poorly trained drunken soviets in outdated aircraft.
>>
Luftwaffe only had two fighter lines the Fockewulfs and Messerschmitt, what else would the German Aces use? or are you implying the plane had a significant advantage over others?
>>
russian's mstly also spanish civil war helped train some of the pilots
>>

Fighting a poorly trained enemy and the German system of credited "kills".

The plane itself was a tool, nothing more.

Nothing. It was German doctoring of pilots flying multiple sorties a day, never being rotated to the rear, and always having targets of opportunity on every front.

You could have done the least bit of research, but fuck it, right? Why do that when this whole board is retarded. I hate this place

it depends on what version you are talking about. the 109 and spitfire were constantly competing with eachother for the title of best fighter.

in general, it was a very good energy fighter with center line armament, while soviet planes were turn and burn fighters. energy tactics allow the pilot to survive because the plane is never at a disadvantage. tnb fighters can kill a guy, but they are now low and slow and ripe for being killed by someone else.

Two things
>Soviet incompetence
Soviet fighters as a whole lagged behind the Bf 109 until mid-1943, and they were caught in the middle of a major reorganization at the outbreak of war. They didn't even bother with reforming training until after Kursk, and their training was so horrifically bad at the outbreak of war that most pilots flying "modern" types hadn't even fired their guns. Operational practices were terrible, to the point that General Novikov, the guy who ended up taking command of the VVS at the end of 1941, got his position for such groundbreaking concepts as
>actually escorting bombers
>putting radios on planes
>actually having some semblance of discipline among fighter pilots

And then you've got
>Luftwaffe pilots overreporting
Take the Crimean campaign in 1943-1944. Soviet reported losses for the 5-month operation were under 200 aircraft across three Air Armies committed (about 1,500 aircraft). Meanwhile, selected claims from German units in that campaign include:
>Gerhard Barkhorn being credited with 50 kills in a single month
>III./JG 52 claiming 1,000 kills in the last month they were deployed in the Crimea
>II./SG 2 - a fighter-bomber unit equipped with Fw 190s - being credited with ~2,000 kills across the campaign
>>
>OP actually believes Hartmann shot down 300+ planes

I'm still confused how anyone with even a passing knowledge of air combat could believe such an obvious lie

For the most part, the German practice of keeping elite pilots in front-line squadrons until they were shot down, and the fact that they fought heavily outnumbered.

The Germans had large numbers of bombers and slow low-altitude attack planes to shoot down.

More believable than some Russian claims about kills.

You say the same shit all the time
Everyone knows everyone over reported
The worst was probably in korea where soviet pilots were given credit if the camera was over an aircraft for half a second
