I really did like Reach's UNSC aesthetic. Bungie took a really good utilitarian approach as apposed to 343's sleeker designs.

I'd say you're right about 4, but 5 got quite a bit better with weapon detail, at least.

The magnum actually has a gas piston, bolt face, and slide lock, (It also has a cycling animation in third person), and is held with a thumbs forward grip.

The DMR actually has an ejection port, unlike in 4, and on the rifles, the character does a slingshot with the charging handle on empty reloads, rather than simply shoving the charging handle forward out of the locked position.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtP5J5EbQ_M

Also, the characters actually have trigger discipline for the first time ever.

They still haven't fixed the shotgun. In previous halos, the gun would have the magazine tube above the barrel and shells would be ejected out through the side. However, in Halo 4 & 5, the design makes no sense at all, as the shells eject through the same way they entered.
>>

Ended up making a needler where the bolts didnt automatically fly at targets leaving the barrel - they shot forward, slowly came to a stop, and would hover in midair indefinitely, they'd then home-in on and 1 shot anything within a certain range.

basically we made a game mode with only needlers setting up ambushes around corners via halo-man seeking needler death mines.

Right, something about what happened at reach or something? They were all groundside or otherwise in the thick of the fighting while Noble Team was executing their mission to get Cortana and Doctor Halsey to the Pillar of Autumn, if I remember correctly. All presumed dead by one way or another, as well. God damn it, 343. Gimme some fucking back story and next time, hype up the story you're actually going to use.

>mfw all that hype around Chief supposedly going AWOL for no known reason, massive fight against Osiris Team, Chief what are you doing, only to get this other bullshit.

Instead, we got "I found Cortana. Let's go do the thing". Rest of Blue team (Oh hey blue team! good to see you! nah, I don't need any backstory since I thought you were all dead) is just totally "Yeah, sounds good".

"Osiris team! We have to do the thing and bring back the Chief!"
"Yeah, ok. Sounds good"
"Chief! I found you! Ha Ha! I'm going to stick this metal thingy to yo-AHJKGFG. Ack, I am defeat. You were right Chief"

"Cortana, pls stop doing the thing"
"no, John. I love not being sane anymore. Huzzah, I am the bad guy now, faggots!"
"Cortana pls"

I was so fucking angry at how they hyped that shit up to tell a near completely different story when the actual game dropped.

I try to give them the benefit of the doubt. I really do. like all the issues with Metal Gear Solid V: TPP. Based Kojima did what he could with Konami acting like a bunch of cunts trying to run his project and tell him what to do and how to do it. They set budget constraints and time limits that forced Kojima to end up having to leave out the ultra-critical final mission that closes the ties with Eli, the Floating Boy, Sehelanthropustomuncharickandmortywalkingrobobonerthing, and all that shit. Still an awesome game IMO. But that last mission was fucking necessary and Konami basically ruined it for everyone. Fuck Konami. I bet we're seeing all this metal gear shit now because they want to run that name into the ground out of spite for their cash cow leaving them.

Halo loser here.

There are still some living Spartan-II's, along with a few Spartan-IIIs. However, after the Human-Covenant War the UNSC is kinda trying to sweep it all away. Some Spartan-IIs had their files declassified and had the option to view where they came from, relatives, childhood before ONI got them, all that. Many choose not to look or kept the files and have yet to read it.

Blue team did survive Reach. Chief took a team to destroy valuable intel on a space station above the planet, only him and Linda made it back to the Autumn, though Linda was so fucked up they put her in cryo. The other Spartan-IIs were sent planet side to defend ground based orbital defenses. Many died, but some regrouped conducted hit and run operations on Cov forces digging on the unglassed side of the planet.

The Spartan-IIs eventually stumbled upon surviving HIGHCOM mebers living in top secret facilities, Dr. halsey was in one of these along with a crazy Admiral who designed himself a massive planet cracking bomb with the intent to give the middle finger to the Cov troops still planet side.

Chief, after Halo 1, was drifting in space when he discovered Linda's cryo pod. During emergancies the pods are all ejected. During the battle most of the crew were out of cryo, but due to Linda's condition her's jettisoned. Along with finding her, Chief also came upon a Pelican carrying Sgt. Johnson and a few others. They ditched the Pelican and crammed into Chief's Longsword fighter. They then infiltrated a Cov ship and took over the Bridge (Co0v ships have the bridge located in the center of the ship). Cortanna vented the atmosphere in other parts and voila, a human controlled Cov ship with a ton of asphyxiated crewmen inside.

Due to the Cole Protocol, all human ships must jump to a random planet before heading to UNSC space from combat and no Cov ship captured may be brought directly to Earth. Chief made the decision to take it to Reach, as it is no longer a functional UNSC stronghold

>>30317796
He had other reasons too. When at Reach the discovered a Spartan encoded signal and deployed ground side. High jinx ensue that would see the Spartans and UNSC personnel off the planet. The group then went on to destoy a Cov fleet rally point and delay Cov assaults into the inner colonies. Chief then kinda handed command over to his 2nd in command Fred and various reasons have kept the other Spartans and the Chief separated.

The other Spartans remained under the control of various UNSC commands and went on to fight in many major theaters and campaigns.while Chief was off saving the day. After Halo 4 when he is finally brought back into the fold, the UNSC is beginning its attempts to rein the Spartans in, fearing that with the war over they would snap or have some choice words to say about their careers. At the same time, they hope to put a pretty face on people asking questions about their origins by returning to a volunteer program with less augmentation, and more advanced tech. These are the Spartan-IVs, lesser Spartan-II quality with a mix of Spartan II quantity topped with Spartan-I volunteer origins.

Anything else you guys want to know? I literally have just about every Halo book sitting behind me buried in one of my bookshelves.
>>
>>30317862

I like the halo aesthetics, but I never really got he lore too well. I've only played like halo 2 or 3, and never really finished them except for one I think where you kill the chieftain at the end, who I always died to.

I do own and and finish Halo: Reach, which was pretty good imo.

The thing that bothers me is the spartan 2's were kidnapped as children, and they got replaced by cheap clones or copies of themselves.

Why did they have to recruit kids.

Why not just make proper clones from of the kids that don't die, and raise them from birth to be perfect soldiers, instead of the whole kidnap children from their beds and turn them into super soldiers angle.

It just came off to me as an attempt at edgy storytelling.
>>
>>30318174
Flash clones eventually deteriorate and die after a short while. The deaths were then explained as genetic disorders.
>>
>>30311430
HE'S GOT THE FIST OF RUKT!
>>
>>30312313
I wouldn't mind the colors so much if the armor didn't look so jarringly different from the other games. Not to mention that Reach is basically the most tacticool of them all. Which is a shame because the marine designs were pretty good and the gear upgrades were neat. At least the next one will be on windows 10.
>>
>>30316672
If you wanna hear some other bullshit, at least if I remember correctly; There were only around 33 that survived till Reach, 3 of which were way out doing their own shit (Grey team, likely). And at least as it was written at the time, Chief, Linda, and Joshua(I think) did a mission in space, and sent every single other Spartan groundside. Josh died, Linda nearly died, and of the Spartans that went skydiving sans parachute, only about a dozen Survived. Linda, Kelly, Fred, Will, Grace, Anton, and some others I can't remember. By the time Spartan III's were coming around (which were all top secret, suicide mission spartans) There were only about five Spartans still alive.

So when 343, and whatever writers start pulling spartans out of nowhere (Naomi, Jorge) It really pisses me off, cause there really weren't many to begin with, and it doesn't even make sense for Spartans to operate without other Spartans (Barring Kurt. There was good reasoning there).
>>
>>30318215
Then why not make proper clones of the kids that showed traits they wanted in Spartans?

Also, Why do the "innies" hate the UEG so much? I'm currently watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2gzVlqH8Ag and it seems that their resentment is disproportional.
Why couldn't the problems be solved, was it even possible? Did the Carver findings screw any chance they previously had?
>>
>>30318480
Flash clones deteriorate quickly. They have a few years before there bodies bteak down. Its explained to be caused by the fact that the cells never split and formed natural but were forced, this causes issues with cellular reproduction later that leads to defects which then lead to death.

As for the Innies, they are like the British and early Americans. The outer colonies believe they are treated unfairly and started political tensions over a variety of things. Military officials started sanctioning operations against the more militant colonists, and this of course lead to support stacking up in favor of the Innies. This lead to more black ops and political measures to stifle everything and then next thing you know you have a Civil War brewing in the outer colonies.

Its thought that there was a second class of Spartan-IIs, as Halsey and CPO Mendez both remained on Reach for a while and had time to graduate another class. How many actually made it is unknown though.
>>
>>30318619
Why are 7.62 guns so weak in halo, or rather how do they justify it and their designs?
I like to pretend that they ammo was made by the Japanese.
>>
>>30317796
>>30317862
Any more about Spartan Grey Team? Last piece of info on them I saw was they were too far behind enemy lines to be called back for the invasion of Reach?
>>
>>30318710
Nothing on them. Bungie and 343 have a tendency to pull the oddest bits of forgotten lore out at weird tomes so we might hear about them more as the current books talks about how the UNSC handles older Spartan-IIs.

As far as we know, they conducted missions behind enemy lines and are either now MIA or ONI has them running black ops.
>>
>>30318696
Its more of a noguns bad decision that lead to the weapon specs being below what we'd expect to see. You can see as the games went on that they tried to be more practical in design and use, but the older lore for weapon and vehicle specs remained the same as theres no real need for them to go back and fix it.

I believe there was a little essay, post, thing were a guy went through all the UNSCs stuff and respec'd it more in line with our stuff today.
>>
>>30318731
Hmmm, one more question since you are here anon, has it been explained how the Spirit of Fire made its way to the ark?

Person writing the new books. "Thursday's War" and all that. There are some good ideas in there, but it all kinda falls flat and wrecks the story a bit to most.

ONI's portrayal is pretty horrible, like CIA during the Bay of Pigs horrible. They do stupid convoluted shit with there retard old vagina at the top looking down on the shadow stuff they organization does. The writers can't make up whether ONI is a crazy conspiracy machine or a force for good.

As someone who has read halo FF and crossovers with halo, Holy shit, was it that bad?

Good news though, I just checked the two halo books a friend gave me a while back, (3 or 4 years ago?) that I haven't read yet. They are precisely "HALO THE FALL OF REACH" by Eric Nylund, and "HALO THE FLOOD" By William C. Dietz.

That's good right? Kinda weird how they are differently sized.

Is there any other Halo cannon or reading I should concern myself with? I've held off reading them since I haven't played the Halo games properly, and read the books in chronological order.

How different would the Covie/Human war go if Human tech was scaled to our current progress? I mean we already have prototype ship mounted railguns and laserguns and genetical/mechanical augmentation is kind of starting to happen. Who knows what crazy shit we will have in the next 50 years, much less 500. And even then, in the Halo universe the UNSC was doing pretty well considering they were being attacked by several different species with OP tech while all the humans had were bullets and happy thoughts.
It just seems that with todays technological advancement we would be kicking Covie ass into the next Sunday by the time they try to molest us.

Adults or adolescents have societal expectations of what's fair or reasonable. Tell a real life Marine to go charge a bunker by themselves and they'll tell you to fuck off. Tell a Spartan II and they'll do it with confidence and without anywhere near as much fear.

If they could equip MJOLNIR armour with AIs, they would, but AIs are costly to produce and can't be used for long duration counter insurgency missions for which the Spartans were originally intended.

They weren't based on the protags, though. Their armor is pretty standard and most of those pieces can be obtained early on. The color tones in Reach were more darker and sensible compared to 4's. Halo loser again.

The Halo franchise has so many good places it could branch out to, they could even take the place of all the books and stuff 343 are putting out. Most Halo players entered Halo 4 not knowing what the hell was happening (same in H5) because they didn't shift through the mountains of books and backstory outside of the game.

Game where you play the captain of UNSC ship and fight in 3 dimensions against splintered Covenant and resurgent Innies near the Outer Colonies to help provide background on why ONI is restarting the same black ops missions they did before the war and to illustrate how much of a bad way both Humanity and the Arbiter are after the War (which leaves them open for a crazed AI to swoop in with her force to make them reunite or perish with their already engaged forces..)

Or maybe you are an ODST brought in to ONI to engage in the aforementioned black ops. Assassinating colonial leaders who are waving words around carelessly, get in ambushes at a behind the scenes funding of arms to separatists forces fighting the Arbiter, stealth your way into Innie hideaways and ships to sabotage them, or maybe watch over research teams studying classified Forerunner ruins with information the UNSC may need.

Or be a regular old marine whose unit is stationed on the Infinity and are deployed to fight all the battles we never see as Chief and Spartan-0IVs are off doing the heavy lifting. Maybe have a squad you can order around the battlefield, show us the human side of those who are veterans of a decades long war that left much of humanity glassed and dead.

So much better then reading yet again about 343's Mary Sues and convoluted ONI fuckery without backgrounds I have to read 4 books for.
>>
>>30326905

>>
>>30325958

>>
>>30326905
Yeah but 343 is obsessed with replacing everything bungie did with their own versions and changes.
>>
>>30327046
Its both. Sex drive repression was a side effect, though it matters little due to the mental state of Spartan-IIs and their anti-social behavior. Its kinda implied that the only people they would really ever be able to hook up with is other Spartans, and even that is neigh impossible as they could take it as compromising their combat effectiveness. However, with the War mostly over, it would be interesting to see Spartans try to retire or start some kind of bonus army stunt demanding compensation for what the UNSC did to them.

Imagine seeing a Spartan in a bar, most of humanity are veterans but you can bet that they are getting free drinks from everyone there. Or see them running for an office, with their genius level intelligence and lifetime service they are taking any election they enter.
>>
>>30327263
>You will never pick up the emotional stunted 6'2 ripped spartan qt at the bar and go back home for some death by snoosnoo

>>
>>30327263
Side note, and its these problems in mind that are causing ONI to dick around the Spartan-IIs and try to completely make the suicidal children of the Spartan-IIIs disappear.

Side note, they only really good (depending on how you look at it) thing 343 did lore wise was the Hunt the Truth audio series. I was amazed at its quality and wish they did more stuff like that.
>>
>>30327263
In my opinion, Chief wouldn't sit in a bar, neither would the rest of Blue Team.
If Chief would drink, he'd probably do it alone in his tiny apartment.

Otherwise, I don't think somebody who has been a trained killer since childhood could ever just settle down. They'd be something like an uber Travis Haley times 10.

Those Reach models look like multiplayer characters to me.

Don't match the designs of any of Noble Team.

They are the MP guys.
The fact that the person in Kats getup is a dude and also has both arms should be a big giveaway

ODST was pretty decent for this, you even got a shady spook attached to your squad who changes the mission at the last possible second.

>That defense of the ONI building.
>Falling back across the bridge, fighting for every inch before finally blowing it.
>Getting assisted by Marines, ONI security and NMPD.
>Sweep and clear the building as they desperately try to evacuate and burn everything at the same time.

Holy shit, right though?
Was that even real.
Weekly bungie update... oh gosh ;_;

Wasn't the UNSC now the big dog (albeit a wounded one) after Halo 3? Since the Covenant largely cannibalized itself and human tech was really reaching an apex with stuff like the infinity.
>>
>>30328351
Basically. Before they used to do Ops that were pretty deep under the covers, but were practical. They mostly stayed in their lanes and just went as far as they needed too.

Now they just do stupid shit constantly and are made out like some CIA/Illuminati shadow organization.

You should definitely listen to the Hunt the Truth audio bit they did to kinda see the change, its actually pretty good but the ONI portrayal is just...bleh.

>>30328410
ODST is highly under appreciated, but yeah something similar would be cool.

It even answers the same thing above. ONI has their own secret squirrel stuff going on, but the extent of it makes sense and they don't do anything crazy to get what they needed.

Didn't help that the Covenant always just imitated Forerunner designs and never tried improving them.

Shit, Cortana made the plasma torpedoes several times more effective just by changing some settings.

Writefag entertaining the idea of a Halo fanfiction here. Is there anything H4 and beyond worth salvaging or should I just extrapolate from everything in the Bungie era?
>>
>>30328449
Humanity is bouncing back massively, the Elites and others are all engaged in civil wars or retreating back to their own little sections of the world.

Only problem is that now that the war is over, the old Human tendencies are coming out. Old scores to settle from during and even before the war are now giving ONi and the UNSC military as a whole a run for their money.
>>
>>30328478
Its probably all been beaten to death at this point if its Bungie-era.
>>
>>30328478
Humanity's rise from the ashes has some great themes and a lot of the ONI stuff can be handled in a really interesting way as Humanity takes it's place as the new power-player in the galaxy.

Most of the relevant stuff in H4 and H5 focuses around the forerunners, so if that's your thing you're going to have to look into them deeper.
>>
>>30328478
Bungie only man. 343 fucked up hard.
>>30328482
Aren't we also funding all that in-fighting on Sanghelios?
>>
>>30328478
The general idea at and after H4 is good.

UNSC is giving way to civilian government, the military needs to resize to meet the new rebuild and pacification missions, the Navy has to guard space lanes, ONI and politicians are trying to still colonial fires, Spartans-IIs and IIIs have to find a new place for themselves due to neglect, humanity is incorporating vast technological growth while juggling their new diplomatic ties with other races they had fought for decades.

There is a lot of great places to write a story up, you just have to make it better then the shit 343 is throwing out.

>you just have to make it better then the shit 343 is throwing out.
Well that's sounds piss easy for what it's worth

Another of ONIs super smart plans that will totally not be a problem later in the future. I think Glasslands or Thursday's War covers the stupid shit they are doing in that department.

That doesn't sound like an allegory for our interventionist fuckery in the Middle East at all.

Yeah I figured 343's stories would be trash.

One idea I've been entertaining for the longest time is actually a crossover (say what you will of that) with Mass Effect and a pinch or two of Firefly.

Probably wouldn't get much recognition, but whatever.

What is the probability that we will see an ODST like unit in our lifetime?

I mean, Rangers are the ones that most resemble them. Specialized shock troops, send in in company sized elements.
>>
>>30328530
Dude, I think it already fucked up. The guy who they funded was the main bad guy Elite in 4.
IIRC, instead of both sides destabilizing each other indefinitely, the radical Elite used a teleporter on a Forerunner installation and ended up on some Covenant farm world that hadn't heard the good news. Some odd months later and he actually has the Covenant somewhat back together chasing that Forerunner honeydick.

If we actually manage to figure out drop-pods I'll join up, even if its just for fun like parachuting.
