Basically I've seen a number of articles that imply the recoil on a .380 makes it foolproof to unload compared to a 9mm when trying to hit something.
I've been to the range more than once with 45 and 9mm. My 45 groupings are shit due to recoil, 9mm is better. .380 is supposed to be the baby step down.

If you mean to carry on the waist there should be no issue with a single stack 9 no matter how skelly you are. If you want to pocket carry consider a .380
It should be fine as long as you use copper cross tips like the Underwood xtreme penetrator, but I wouldn't recommend it as a full time carry piece. You should only carry in the pocket when you can't on the waist.

The problem with .380 is that it doesn't have enough ass to push expanding projectiles past 12" of ballistic gel, especially when auto glass or heavy clothes are involved. If you carry a .380 you need to consider carrying a load that doesn't expand.

Alright so I found a very decent study that's exactly the kind of thing I was looking at earlier.

This includes 4 layers of clothing before the ballistics gel.
.380 penetration from available self defense ammo ranged from just under 12" to over 25" of gel penetration depending on brand (between brands, not within brand tests)
(FURTHER than any of the tested 9mm ammo)
Conversely, the 9mm was actually more within the 12-18" across all brands.
Meanwhile .40 S&W looks like over-penetration and .45 is about right yet again recoil which is the whole reason I'm looking around 9mm.
