Sometime last year in Australia, we had a hostage situation, and in the ensuing firefight one of the hostage was killed by a stray bullet or ricochet, apparently because police were using 5.56. I this king of situation, would they be better served using slower heavier rounds, like .45, or 300 Blackout? Aren't there also lots of /k/mmandos who recommend short barrel carbines in 5.56 for HD, aren't you also worried about over penetration?

Tasty.

5.56 penetrates less drywall than pistols.

All in all it wouldn't have mattered, a .45 or .300 blk would penetrate a single wall in still be lethal as well.

Considering .45 is about 3 times slower then 5.56 (according to Wikipedia), wouldn't you get less ricocheting from .45? Also couldn't you use full lead bullets to encourage squashing rather then bouncing, since the bad guy probably wasn't wearing a est?

no you'd get more.

You're misinterpreting velocity for mass and kinetic energy. And no, what would they 'squash' against in this case? The drywall? No.

They were marble walls which made a ricochet more likely

For this type of situation what would be ideal then, shotguns? Low velocity 5.56? Tear Gas the whole place?

High caliber rifle round fired by a marksman across the street straight through the plate glass window, as soon as it became clear this guy wasn't going to be talked down.

Velocity isn't the important thing here, it's not a case of the slowest bullet doing the least penetration or ricochet. 5.56 has low penetration due to characteristics of the projectile, it's designed to fragment and break apart. You can google drywall penetration of different calibres and see for yourself.

I think this is a common case of people thinking they can nut out complex issues using "common sense" when in reality you're misinformed and not considering all the variables. Just like those "jet fuel can't melt steel beams" fags who are convinced you can tell 9/11 was an inside job from eyeballing footage of a tower collapsing. If you're not an expert in engineering, demolition or building construction then your layman's opinion based on your limited experience is highly likely to be completely wrong.

Absolutely nothing to do with penetration.
The cafe was formerly a bank building built with marble walls.

As noted by >>30222313 noted, the structure of the building meant that any stray rounds that hit the walls or floor would have a fragmented and ricocheted.

The inherent design of 5.56 to fragment and yaw upon impact due to the high muzzle velocity makes the use of AR15s in solid confined structures potentially dangerous for hostages and assault team members.

A former TAG-East commander has criticized the the choice of ar15s over more niche SMGs such as the mp5 or UMP.
