Sup /k/, former nogunz here, just bought my first rifle, a Mauser K98k(?)
Got it for a steal from an uncle, along with two boxes of ammo. He got it from some seedy pawn shop in Baltimore, the shop owner said it was somebody's war trophy but I don't know about all that.
It's a little beat up, missing some parts. Any funs expert awake who can give me a decent idea of what I got?

Also just gonna show this thing off. The metal is in nice shape, theres a little bit of pitting in the chamber but I've cleaned off what little rust there was with a rag and wd-40. I'll go get a proper cleaning kit soon.
All the serial numbers match, except for the bolt, but all the bolt's serial numbers match up, so I'm okay with that.

A nice example of a bringback sporter. Probably done in the 50's. Always good to find them without the barrels cut down or drilled in tap. Estimate for value 2-300.

how much?

I was told this is a 98k, but the front looks all wrong. Is this an uncommon model of mauser?
I know it's missing things though. It has some parts in the stock which have been replaced (I'll show pics if anyone is interested)
>>
>>30216289
Where is the ammo from? if its older and from Germany dont shoot it
>>
>>30216467
Yes it's a 98k. Nothing at all with the front, the stock has been cut down.
>>
>>30216467
It's missing the sight hood. And of course since it's a sport it doesn't have the bayonet lug concealing most of the cleaning rod.

I dunno, I don't speak commie runes
>>30216480
>>30216442
What's the difference between the sports and the standard? Also I doubt it was done in the 50s, it has certain 1940's german marks
>>30216448
Maybe I talked him into letting it go for 60. But I've had my eye on it for a while
>>
>>30216467
It is a k98, it's just been sporterized with the cut down stock and whatnot.
>>
>>30216493
Its Yugo ammo, shits pretty good. Your rifle is worth 100-150 btw

Also what did these used to be?
>>
>>30216480
>missing front sight hood
This means nothing.
Many soldiers in the German infantry removed the hoods. Look at war time pictures.
It's actually more historically accurate to not actually have one.

But, yeah, bayo lug and stock are fucked.

>>30216500
Nice, thanks much
>>
>>30216493
Sporterization means to take a military rifle like a mauser or enfield and modify to be more of a civilian/hunting rifle, cutting off the front part to reduce weight, mounting a scope, ext...
Keep in mind rifles that have been sporterized will always be less expensive than a rifle in the original configuration.

Ahh. Well thanks much, cleared that right up.

I have a couple more, pics, nothing special so I'll just post if requested. I'll just leave the centerfold here though.

Also, any tips for taking apart the bolt? Will a noguns like me be able to break one of the parts?
>>
>>30216493
It might have been made in Germany in the 40's, but it was still sporterized in the 1950's or later.
>>
>>30216493
Top line is just 7.9mm
Guessing next is a count for the box
The third says "For Universal Grain" I think
Last is "Varut: Nts-05"

There's some spelling differences from Russian so I dunno where it's from/what the language actually is but that's kinda close.
>>
>>30216554
all you need is a new stock and a new bayo lug and you have an 800 dollar rifle
>>
>>30216554
>Also, any tips for taking apart the bolt?
There's dozens of tutorials all over youtube, I'd recommend looking it up on there.

>Can a noguns like me break one of the parts
It's almost guaranteed you will not, some really fancy/complicated/cheap guns can be fucked up easily but you generally can't hurt an old warhorse like this unless you take a hammer to it or something.
>>
>>30216517
I know, just pointing it out. People new to a Mauser might not know that. And some want their rifle to be complete.

When I bought my VZ24 I had to buy a new pair of ears for the front sight since they were missing. Looks better with a hood or ears also.

>>30216565
This
>>
Does it have a cleaning rod? that looks a little short. I dont know if that ammo is corrosive.
>>
>>30216584
The cleaning rods on Mausers are intentionally short, the idea was that you and two of your buddies were supposed to combine your cleaning rods into one full length one.

Pretty retarded concept honestly.
>>
>>30216565
>>30216581
Do Frankensteined historical guns still hold their value?
>>30216595
Top of the line German engineering right there. I have drive a volkswagen built without a single cupholder. It's like they intentionally add annoyances.
>>
>>30216625
No, Sporters are ALWAYS worth less then what they would be if left alone. If you can restore your 98K you have an easy 800-950
>>
>>30216625
>Do Frankensteined historical guns still hold their value?
almost universally, no.
>>
>>30216595

I mean, i guess it works... but... Lol.

OP, you should buy yourself a rod if you intend to shoot corrosive ammo, thorough cleaning is a must. If it isnt you will get able to get away with just oiling the bore
>>
>>30216625
No, any milsurp collecters will be able to tell immediately if your K98 is original, Russian capture/refurbished, or de-sporterized and the price they will pay reflects that.
>>
OP if you want to Restore it you might want to contact Mitchell's Mauser's to get a new stock with all the small parts.
>>
>>30216639
A restored rifle is not the same, you won't get premium price for it unless it was never bubba fucked.
>>
>>30216807
His wasnt really that fucked with, The rifle its self is in okay shape but the stock is chopped obvi. Considering Nazee Mausers go for like 1300 800 bucks isnt that bad
>>
>>30216500
>>30216493
It depends theres two types of yugo ammo the one with the blue primers are the best 8mm milsurp you can get besides portugese.if it has a red primer but a stronger spring because those primers are hard as fuck.
>>
>>30216559

It's Serbian. That ammo is good stuff by the way.
>>
>>30216824
No perfect condition mauser are that much.russian captures/mismatched/ worn parts or simmilar condition can go for around 400-600
>>
>>30216584
The yugoslav ammo posted is generally accepted as corrosive.
>>
>>30216706
>contact Mitchell's Mauser's to get a new stock with all the small parts.

Not OP, but is that a thing?
>>
>>30216554
Nigga never take the bolt out of a mauser without the safety on
>>
>>30218765
Thanks, couldn't quite make out what it was.
>>
>>30216289

Buy this stock, and refinish it. Your K98 will be restored to non-fudd status.
