So, a bunch of the locals here on my street decided they want to start a local militia. The founder I guess you could call him is a retired Army vet who thinks we should have one for some reason. The idea spread like wild fire among all the fellas like him, and they even went as far as to send invitations to join to everyone on the road. He has like 30+ acres of land he said we could use to "train" and what not. They even agreed to pool money together to buy cheap kits for the people who don't have anything including shitty surplus rifles. Should I join the podunk operators or stay outta this shit?

Mate, if it's not illegal, there's no problem. Of course, if you seek some less savory and possibly illegal pursuits, then it would be better for you to steer away from then, as joining would add you to yet another watchlist, or bump up your threat level.

It really bothers me that stores act like youre a criminal for wanting to buy a gift for someone.

The only way the store would be lieable is if they knew you were doing something illegal, and even if they the knew all they have to do is say the did not. Would not believe how easy it is to stay out of trouble simply keeping your mouth shut.

"on behalf" means that you are acting as their agent to purchase the firearm.

In the case of a gift you are indeed the buyer and are using you own funds. That you intend to give it away after you, the buyer, buy it, matters to the ATF not at all.

Look up straw purchase prosecutions. Not a single one involves buying a firearm as a gift.

To be clear, here it mean buying a gun then giving a gun to someone later as a present.

As far as I know, intent is key here. They can't stop you buying a gun yourself, then choosing later to give it to someone. But I don't think you can buy a gun specifically for another person on their behalf.

But I could be wrong.
>>
>>30210568
No they're trying to emulate formality like the founding fathers. By asserting a certain amount of formality they hope to legitimize the document/idea and make it seem to be more than some idea. It's fine, just silly.

>>30212206
>But I don't think you can buy a gun specifically for another person on their behalf.
You absolutely can. Where the issue comes in is if you lie about who the ultimate recipient of the gun is and/or they cannot legally own said gun.

>I buy x for y
>I state this
>They can legally purchase or own x
This is fine

>I buy x for y

OP here, I have an update I asked about the whole gun thing and I was told he has an FFL. My only qualm is that a local militia should actually have physical training. Getting all of the men in a community together and not using the opportunity to improve your overall physical fitness is a waste. For some reason, I get the feeling that most militia members are fat-asses just looking for people to complain about Obama with.

If you're in a good community, I don't see why not. Could be a good way to get some non-forced socialization.
>>
Not my road then because I live in GA on 662 street address.
>>
>>30211971
No, I've read the ATF filings on the matter. They recommend buying a gift card or some stupid shit, but they've made no legal rulings on giving someone a gun as a gift. If you are certain someone is not a felon and you purchase a firearm on their behalf, then it is not a straw purchase. I can't think of a single instance where the ATF has gone after a father buying a rifle for his son's 18th birthday.
>>
>>30210256
