Also it has the 88 on the side of the reciever milled out because a thumb groove is there for using stripper clips i believe

It's made at Danzig Imperial Arsenal in 1891; looks to have been converted to Gew.88/05 based on the notch in the receiver ring.
The second serial number stamped on the receiver ring over the Imperial crown is probably a Turkish-applied serial number.

The date is right below the maker's mark: in this case, Danzig in 1891.

For that, the only sure bet is to slug the barrel to see its true diameter: this is because occasionally these old 88s are so mix and matched that in spite of the receiver being modernized, it could possibly be mated to a barrel that hasn't been updated to the 1905 spec 7.92 projectile.
They're really smooth guns and I like them a lot, and they tend to be really cheap. I'd get it, and just make DAMNED sure that the barrel is the diameter it needs to be. Even then, you should still shoot mild loads from it, just because it is old, and it should be treated nicely now.

It's been awhile since I've seen one, but I'd say $400 is a little bit stiff... unless the condition is truly fantastic, or they're very uncommon where you live.

Its the first ive seen around here and the condition isnt all that great the back sight doesnt click into the positions though everything else seems to be in pretty good shape

Where are you from? Before you buy, it's worth looking at Gunbroker real quick just to see what they're going for and in what condition, and if you still want that one you're looking at now after checking online, then by all means feel comfortable buying it.
