The can does help with recoil versus bare muzzle, just not as much as a properly aggressive brake will. I can certainly tell the difference with a dt can on a bolt gun for instance vs unsuppressed but on the braked ARs recoil is worse.

On a bolt gun, we were talking about ar's.
And on a bolt gun, it's the weight of the can that reduces recoil, not the baffles. The reason is because the gases have no where to go but out the front so the can acts like a barrel but with no friction on the bullet.

If I were going to build another I'd get a Strike Industries Type 89 (jap rifle comp), its not that loud and does a good job at reducing recoil, as seen in this comparison:
