Why did Germany lose the Battle of Jutland and why was the British admiral reviled by the British public despite the fact that he won?

British victory was more good luck than good management. While the Germans were beaten back to their ports, they inflicted much more damage on the British than they incurred. There were significant inadequacies in British doctrine (e.g. a Nelsonian obsession with rate-of-fire which left magazine hatches open to shove shells through faster, with the inevitable result of entire ships being blown to smithereens) which contributed to the level of damage suffered too.

Interesting.

Generally German ships had much more compartments and overall better protection. So while Royal Navy ships were blown sky-high when hit, the Seydlitz managed to sail back home even though being nearly destroyed.

Vastly out maneuvered. British were able to almost cross the T at every point during the main engagement.

Not enough ships for a German breakthrough

British used to get very butt hurt when their naval supremacy was challenged in any fashion, and particularly sore when the Germans marched in there and punched more bong ships to the bottom of the sea then the RN could.

It didn't matter of the Kaiser's navy returned to port, it was the fact that any survived contact. Jutland was the first time in a long time confidence in the RN was shaken in a very long time.

I feel like the whole hatches left open for higher reload speed is a copout given by the British for flawed ship design or using ships in a role they were never intended to be used, which then got parroted incorrectly through the decades. Not saying it didn't happen, but the fact that the Hood blew up shortly after engaging the Bismarck (removing the factor of sailors leaving the flash doors open for higher RoF) would make one think that British armor schemes for their battlecruisers was flawed, or they were criminally misused. After all, at Jutland 3 British battlecruisers exploded with almost no survivors, and if not for a quick acting marine HMS Lion would have followed the same fate.

The Germans were outnumbered, so naturally attempted to leave upon realizing this (and did so in very good order).

It was all but foregone conclusion, the Grand Fleet was much larger than the High Seas Fleet, and the RN could always rely on higher levels of warship production as well.

You know I like this answer.

On the plus side, it made the RN so scared of ever doing anything again that it left the KM to pose a serious threat throughout WWII despite being vastly outgunned and outnumbered, all because of the British admiralty being terrified of losing ships even if it meant taking the KM out entirely.

It wasn't a serious threat to the British Navy, the fear was that one of their surface raiders would get out into shipping lanes and fuck everything up.
That was it, there was no fear of the Kriegsmarine actually defeating the RN or even inflicting serious losses upon it.

Why did Germany have such a shit navy?

Look at a map, anon.

No it was just the battlecruisers.

The British Battlecruisers were fast, well armed, but poorly armored.

The German Battlecruisers were fast, well armored, with mediocre guns.

The Royal Navy battleships proved they could take a fantastic beating and sail away. Warspite took something like 100 shots, including 8 large caliber rounds and survived.

>Why did Germany lose the Battle of Jutland and why was the British admiral reviled by the British public despite the fact that he won?

Because much of the Navy and Public was clamoring for a Trafalgar-esque cataclysmic battle where they would gallantly sally forth and crush the German Navy in one fell swoop.

The British, with a large overseas empire, saw any existence of a navy even remotely comparable as a threat to the security of the empire, and Jutland presented an opportunity to cut down the Germans.

While the British did lose more ships at Jutland, they took the field of battle and forced the Germans to withdraw under the cover of torpedoes launched by their destroyers. Upon seeing this, Jellicoe opted to turn away and allow the Germans to retreat rather than risk losing more ships in the chase- either to torpedoes or by being drawn into a minefield. There was a tremendous backlash over this as it was seen to be a squandering of the opportunity to sink much of the German navy.

It's important to understand that it was truly an inconclusive battle. Neither the British nor Germans sunk enough ships to influence future strategy. For the British, this was fine. They simply maintained control of what they already had.
