That "axe thing" is the fasces and predates Italy by a millenia or two. It was used as a symbol and lent its name to a political party.

Just to be on the safe side, I took all my firearms that had old military insignias and used an angle grinder to take them off.
That's OK, right? Keeps 'em legal and everything. Anyway, some of them were Nazi anyway, so probably best to clean them up.
