Use some critical thiking, as there is a lot of disinformation floating around.
When you're tired of being an armchair gun nut, look for a shooting club near you, go there and ask around.
Shooting clubs often have minimal internet presence, but your nearest gunshop can probably tip you.
Now, there is a chance some clubs won't take new people in since people have been rushing the shooting clubs lately, for some reason.
If you manage to find a good, friendly club, you'll have to do the following :
>pay for joining. Generally 100 to 200€ once.
>pay a yearly fee, 100 to 200 as well. Can be cheaper if you're young.
>go to a doctor, have him sign a paper saying you can to shooting sports (ie you're not crazy)
>pay for your shooting licence delivered by the FFT (fédération française de tir), around 70€ a year
>have your doctor sign the licence
At first it seems troublesome, especially if you compare to what American have, but as long as you have the monney it's not so bad. I was reluctant at first but it's worth it, guns are cool and shooting them is cooler.
With the FFT licence you can buy guns and ammo.
Most clubs also have guns to loan.

Since we have VERY similar laws, I'd like to add something.
On the topic of gun clubs. Those may seem very scary to the outsider, which as a beginner you automatically are.
BUT
the people in gun clubs are generally very friendly. I have noticed this in mine, and I have read consisting reports from other EU anons.
This is, as far as I can tell, due to the fact that for us Euros, shooting is a fairly expensive hobby - the costs that the other anon mentioned, expensive guns (fairly basic AR >= 1000€ =~$1100), expensive ammo (Federal Am.Eagle .22lr brick = 4,30€, down to 3,30 if I buy 200 packs; 9mm/.45/etc ~17€ per 5, a guy at my club sells reloaded .38sp for 12€/50rnds) make it so that only fairly wealthy people can actually afford it. Fairly wealthy people in turn tend to be fairly well educated as well as fairly cultivated. Thats not to say there are no idiots or assholes per se, its just a lot less ridiculously redneck-y than what the yanks have going on, according to the stories you read in our threads here.
As one other anon (even from France, I believe) so aptly put it:

(in the EU) the gun owners, the people you meet in gun clubs, tend to be the elite of the society.
Oh yeah, on the topic of storing guns - you may have to invest in a safe too (depending on your laws) in which to keep your guns. I know I do.
You'd be looking at 200€ and up for handgun storage, and 4-500€ and up for anything that holds more than 2 long guns.

Je sais très bien combien de temps ça prends dans mon département pour avoir les autos, vu que j'en ai plusieurs et que je suis possesseur d'armes depuis de nombreuses années, et c'est trois semaines-un mois. Il n'y aucun département en France où tu aurais les autorisations en une semaine, à part Paris peut-être et encore.

Pour finir, je pense qu'ils délivreront les autos en cours mais qu'ils ne traiteront plus les nouveaux dossiers à partir du 10 juin. How is that a good thing exactly? The French and German standards already made it impossible to reactivate weapons, there was no need to push things so far.
Know that deactivated weapons that look like automatic weapons of war will be banned as well, even with the new deactivation standards.
They've made many new proposals : a special tax for guns and ammo, stringent medical exams, a serial number on every single part of the gun and every single cartridge, they want to ban every handgun that can shoot more than 21 rounds without reloading, they want to ban every rifle that can shoot more than 11 rounds without reloading or which can have a length of 60 cm or less with a telescopic, folding, or "easily removable" stock.
