I've done a shameful thing, /k/! I went to take a family picture with some family members I haven't seen in a while (been busy growing the human family the last few years, little girl's almost 2 now), and I found some of a gun's second greatest enemy: RUST.

I need some storage tips; how do I keep rust off of my distressingly infrequently used guns. I guess the room it's in is more humid than I thought.

I've recharged the desiccant in the Stack-On wireless dehumidifier every now and then, which is evidently insufficient. I had it sitting in the bottom of the safe, and it went a long time between recharges. I moved it higher in the safe, and it needed recharging 2 days later. Do I need more? Do I need something electrical?

Just oil your shit up and remove the oil before you shoot them. Should keep your shit rust free that just sits around for awhile

Well, looks like oil and a greeny is a bad combination. Google says rust on bluing is best removed dry, and apparently this was the worst thing to do.

Get a jar of DampRid and put it in the bottom of your safe. Try running a weatherproofing strip along the door. If you have guns that you rarely shoot put cosmoline on them and use an easier to clean rust preventative on your more frequently used firearms.

>running a weatherproofing strip along the door.
Oh, goddamnit, duh. Shoulda thought of that.

If you're up for some DIY, make a batch of Ed's Red and include the lanolin in the recipe. I've read that it'll help preserve the firearms for up to two years.

Is that a dried turd on the floor?

Fucking this. Had some guns stored for years without use in family safe back home. No rust. Oiled them up good (not the wood though) and left them there. No rust.

I always put them away almost dripping wet. Unfortunately, as I just found out recently, Rem Oil is weak shit. Never really noticed when I was shooting all the time, since everything was getting cleaned and oiled very frequently. I hadn't been to the range in almost 2 years when I finished the AR-10, and that was only a few weeks ago.

Shit, I have been using whatever I have lying around. Used a lot of "tetra gun vÄpenolje" as we call it here. But also just whatever the local gas station had. Never had this problem. Guess I have just been lucky with my random purchaeses
>>
>>30138562
Someone told me that RemOil is basically a temporary wet lube that leaves behind teflon, but really isn't long lasting.
>>
>>30138594
Well, I hav nveer tried remoil dont sell it where i live i think. try tetra gun workd for me
>>
>>30138594
it isnt long lasting at all. i only use rem oil because i have a lot of it. i only use it to wet guns before heading to the range
>>
>>30138562
Tetra gun actually makes some good quality cleaning shit for cheap
>>
i forgot to add- my jericho 941 seemed to have some surface rust so i used a silicon impregnated rag, it leaves behind a film and seems to work well. the only downside is you have to buy it (but its cheap) and the film is kind of oily so you may have to wipe it down before use
>>
>>30138623
Jesus, you ain't kidding. The old AR was fucking bone dry all throughout.
>>
>>30138645
hear hear. I bought it first time because first foreign country-made oil in local store. turned out pretty good also on sale

I live in Iowa and it's common to have 100% humidity on a daily basis so dealing with rust is something I've always had to do. I go to Walmart and in there and get the dehumidifiers in the plastic container. It has the heads on top and a separate chamber below to collect water and they are fairly cheap so buy a lot and replace when full. As far as rust removal I like to use flitz and for protection I use eezox or corrosionx and just oil with slip 2000. I've never had a single gun rust doing this.
