Bong here...I mobed state side several years ago and recently got thinking.
Is the UK still a valid player as a major military player? I have always been under the impression that we was a smaller but better trained force than most.

Most powerful in Europe for sure.
also able to project their power anywhere in the world, something the Russians even struggle to do.
Major military? Sure
In terms of actual relevance in the world? None
>>30122489
Yeah you are very important tbqh, there's a reason Bush needed UK support to go into Iraq.

Meme.
Highest rank soft power in the world and has the world's leading financial centre. Very relevant.

>Is the UK still a valid player as a major military player?
How is this even a question?
The UK is a permanent member of the UNSC and is one of the economic powerhouses of Yurop.

Only Lockheed-Martin is a bigger arms industry company than BAE.
#3 on the global defence spending: only the US, and China are larger
source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/defence/11936179/What-are-the-biggest-defence-budgets-in-the-world.html
4th largest navy in the world by tonnage, only the US China and Russia are larger, and it can easily be argued to be superior to russia and china in quality.
Airforce is not among the largest any longer, but again, has a huge amount of greater experience and quality of machinery compared to the larger forces like the Russians and Chinese. Ability to project and transport its materiel worldwide puts it way beyond China's current strength.
UK Special forces are still world-leaders, regardless of the occasionall hysterical over-exaggeration some make. SAS & SBS have been establishing the standards for years, and still teach even the US SF soldiers on occasion.
While the UK may be a shadow of its former self as a military superpower, it is in no way irrelevant, and punches far, far above its weight should be able to, for the nation's size. Anyone who claims they are "irrelevant" or the likes is wholly ignorant, or utterly biased.

>better trained
Not while the wars were on, at least. I got out in '12, but in 2011 I was assigned to a cav unit (light scouts) and we had a British light cav major assigned to us for a few months. He ended up making friends with our company commander and spending a lot of time in the field with us. It was apparent that there wasn't enough training going on in his unit. We had PFCs explaining things to him that he had never seen before. All kinds of things, from weapons maintenance, to scout skills, to direct action stuff.

I am not doubting you anon but whenever I am on a new consulting project and want to learn about a business I get the guys on the shop floor to explain things to me even if I already know.
Given differences between bong and clap training, ethos, and equipment, this may be what was being done.
On the other hand he may have just been clueless.
