Will we ever see smart guns that are not about gun control?

No.

Elysium, and it's shit, don't bother with it.
>>
>>30092013
but what I want to know is, how far does it guarantee hits? Like will it push a 308 out to 1000m or is it only good for shit close up (like sub 400m)

Id also like to know if it can lock onto largets. Like can it identify a target that I don't see? (the tank optics ive used can)

basically I want the science behind how it works

Good ammo counters ala Aliens will be cool

>>
>>30097089
So did I
>>
>>30092407
It can sorta lock on, once a target is tagged and as long as it stays inside the scope's FOV. It doesn't guarantee hits because it's the scope that's smart, not a guided round, but it provides expert-sniper level accuracy to 1km+.

Anyway, it's early times. Smart optics are the way to go, they're cheaper and modular (and no bs reliability/gun-control issues) than integrating electronics directly into the gun.
>>
I predict that within 50 years, we will have man-portable weapons that will be able to kill dozens of men near instantaneously and with near perfect accuracy.

So yes. Think of the scene in the first iron man where he targets the terrorists holding hostages and instantly kills them all with a single burst from his shoulder weapons.

Also, mass accelerator weapons.

If you can get past the fact that it's from Gizmodo and the author is kind of a pussy this article has some great info about the smart scopes the military is developing.

>>
>>30091894
Yeh.
We already are to a degree.

Autoranging scopes.

Digital NV and thermal scopes often have video outs that you can run to a external source like a radio

Industry will create the smart guns us the people who use guns want. They arent really going to create the bullshit smart guns the antis want because practically no one who buys guns would ever want such an abomination.
>>
Y'all need to watch aliens or play AVP 1 & 2, M56 is best smart gun.
>>
>>30097094
yeah same here, i think it gets a lot of undeserved hate.
Sure it wasn't brilliant and Jodie Foster couldn't decide what nationality she was but it had some good action scenes and a solid plot.
>>
>>30096978

Radetec makes commercial counters for the AR and a few pistols, I think you have to use their mag or something though

>have laser rangefinder to tell you distance
>have camera on scope to tell you when your crosshair isn't where it's supposed to be
>have electronic lock on trigger to prevent you from pulling it when your crosshair isn't where its supposed to be
It's really not even cutting-edge tech. Also the thing doesn't actually compensate for wind (just shows you a relatively crude estimate of wind and you have to hold off or dial for it manually). Also the thing's enormous and heavy. Also it's still subject to all the limitations of its component pieces (grass/mist/rain will fuck with the rangefinder, game animals aren't reflective so its got about half the useful range of its advertising, can't do wind direction very well, etc).

>>30091942
I didn't know Seal served.

>mass accelerator weapons
We've had those since approximately 145,000BC. It's a fancy pseudoscientific name for "projectile weapon" which would include everything from a thrown rock to a nuclear ICBM.
>>
>>30103397
As far as I know that thing got scrapped, bad management in the company and it was riddled with bugs. Overrated garbage.
>>
>>30103455
The one that appeared on Future Weapons and the MAC did, yeah. There've been a couple others, including one that (very quietly) went to market for like $25,000.

But like I said, the ones that got built really kinda suck. You'll notice in their advertising videos of the "guy who's never touched a gun before scoring first round hit at 1000m" it's:
>very definitely not 1000m, target is very clearly visible in the over-the-shoulder video. I'd estimate about 300-350m.
>shooter is very obviously experienced with precision rifles
>target is HUGE, like 64"x64"
>range is fully bermed and wind is nonexistent
>rifle is strapped to a lead sled

>>30092400
Depends:
>How accurate the rifle/ammo itself is
>How small the target is and if it's moving
>How uniform and steady the winds are
>How consistent the ballistics of the ammo are with what the optic is expecting
>>30092407
It's basic ballistics. If you understand your weapon and ammo well enough, as well as ambient conditions and range to target (and, err, gravity), ballistics are very predictable. So the optic collects wind and temperature data, range to the point-of-aim (w/ a laser), and generates an aiming correction on-the-fly. Then the user simply places the new, corrected reticle over the target and bang.

It's a lot like a CCIP gunsight in a modern attack aircraft, really.

The action and special effects were awesome, but the whole plot of the movie is just let's solve overpopulation and poverty with more overpopulation. I really hope one day Blomkamp will start making awesome sci-fi that isn't just an allegory for "there are poor people in Africa".

that was kinda the point i think

its a scrap gun for the poor
its used in the slums in "elysium".
