I know Gene developed belt-fed versions of the 10 and 15, but they usually involved a more conventional side-feeding design. That picture's a little misleading because it looks like the feed chute is going into the magazine well, but it really goes into the left side of the receiver and the links would be ejected out of the mag well with the brass being ejected out of the ejection port as it would on a normal AR.
Here you can see the left side of the receiver, allowing you to view the feed system better.

To all ya folks hating on the pistol-singleshot shotty combo. From the comparison of the barell diametres, it really looks more like a 20ga then 12ga. Still, it looks like a neat thing to have. And by the ways, the barrel for the shotty seems to be more on the mid-point of the fist, implying it would recoil straight into the forearm, arm and body, instead of snaping a wrist. Should I be talking about how old I feel? I remember when that thing was all the rage with Future Weapons types.
In terms of design, it's a G36 strapped to a 20mm grenade launcher with airburst capability. Was made for this program the Army was trying called Objective Individual Combat Weapon. Flopped because it's bulky as fuck and the 20mm grenades weren't as effective as they wanted.
Ultimately, they split the project into the XM8 and the XM25, which is basically the launcher part of the XM29 redesigned for 25mm grenades.

It goes like this:
1: you remove the back of the shell
2: load the hornets nest (typically rimfire, though .357 and various pistol calibers have been used)
3: you re-attach the end of the shell
4: each round has a pin and spring, which is cocked upon re-attaching the back end of the shell
5: there is a central strike plate, which is hit by the launchers actual firing pin, which simultaneously trips all the other strikers
I got one in .22 LR for 37mm. You gotta have a destructive device stamp to have one, and it doesnt always trigger all the chambers, maybe 50 percent of the time there is one of two chambers that didnt fire.
You are right partially, its not a military device, just something wierd marketed to civilians.
You can buy 40mm and 37mm "shells" that are really just chambers and short barrels that happen to fit inside a launcher. Basically just a way to skirt destructive device and AOW regulations that would essentially do the same thing.
Its not military, its just something made for fun on the "cuz we can" principle.

There was a whole category of late ww1/inter war period submachinegun called "heavy sub machineguns"
Basically, it was a sub machinegun designed with trench warfare era tactics and industrial methods in mind, basically static guy in a heavily fortified position firing into massed advancing infantry, except it could be higher mobility to it could be manuevered along the trench to plug gaps opened in defenses.
Obviously the tactics and manufacturing methods changed and militaries realized that high mobility was cool, but the idea that it would be a static weapon upon arriving was outdated and more modern concepts like the mp38/thompson/suomi replaced them. In very short order.

That mentality is something I've seen a lot in their aircraft designs of the time as well. A lot of well designed aircraft intended to do one, and exactly one job, and were almost impossible to modify.
Meaning that whenever you wanted a plane to do something new, you had to go back and design a whole new plane.
Meanwhile American aircraft were much more open to modification, and repurposing them was much easier, like how the Juggernaut saw extended life after its heyday as an air superiority fighter ended by proving very adept as a multirole strike fighter for ground attack.
