I used to send Canadian Pathfinders + Recce to snipe CV and supply units, then suddenly they can't aim worth shit despite being Elite with 60-95% accuracy.

I stay away from naval. It kinda saddens me that their much hyped killer app was not only broken on release and never fixed, but wasn't even finished, the ships still don't have movement sounds, they just glide silently.

All told I really do like the games, though to be honest most of my time is spent just playing around in PC skirmishes. I never, ever do multiplayer unless I'm playing with my friends, been let down by random teammates too often.

Some pretty hilarious incidents with enemies though, the userbase has a lot of whiny bastards coming out of the woodwork. Like one guy who put up a shitty, halfhearted air defense and then tried to convince us that us exploiting that and bombing all his troop columns to atoms was somehow cheating.

KA-52s are gr8, Mi-28s Shrek tanks hard, Lstr-40s are SAS with better SAMs. You have the Buk, the tung, the Tor. Great options all around. I enjoy blufor and reddit, to say Redfor is inferior? That's ignorance. They were inferior, that last few patches really helped them a lot.

I don't think B5's are meme, but they are only good if the enemy has infrared aa or MANPADS and is slow to react to your bomber. Because otherwise it gets its shit kicked in by anything that is remotely good or if you have enough firepower in the area.

But because if enough people support it, we'll see more added on later. Variety is the spice of life after all, who knows what we'll eventually see.

Though we should keep our expectations realistic, it's a bit much to expect a ton of completely new models for 5 bucks, but some new equipment from lesser known sources is a nice addition.

The issue with that is that the inclusion of anti-air on every single armored vehicle would make those vehicles considerably larger, heavier, and less mobile. A CIWS needs its own radar and a rather large ammo supply if you want to fire it more than once, all of which eats up a lot of space.

In order to carry all that, you're going to need to make the tank bigger, which makes it a bigger target for everything under the sun. The greater tonnage makes it harder to drive without destroying every road and bridge it comes across.

Unless you're going full BOLO supertank, there's simply not enough extra space or tonnage to have every tank with its own air defense system that's more complicated than strapping a Stinger to the top rack and having someone shoot it out the turret hatch.

I only play coop now against Very Hard AI nightmare scenarios.

PvP lost its fun for me because it's all about rushing and map control, while I prefer methodical warfare. It would be better with a no-rush treaty period to set up defenses on your half of the map.

It also needs new ways to determine a winner. The current game modes are crap. And the good game modes, nobody plays.

Vietnam period play is pretty fun though. Although Blufor always gets rekt.

I was once with 2 other guys against a single guy in redfor.

3v1, the fucker only had one single zone, his spawn.

He won. You know why? because he played smart with cheap units and an excellent defense and fucked heavy and expensive attacks until the game said that we lost. This is why i fucking hate when people make "destroy all units" gameplay. Its no fun when you know defense its not a way to win and the game just keeps going until you die. Did had some fun with the game, but with that gamemode it was the very first time in a RTS in which you could win JUST by having a good defense.

It has randomized scenarios and also historical scenarios/campaigns. Also a million downloadable scenarios and mods. Everything from ancient times to future warfare and everything in between, and scales from tactical to grand strategy depending on the scenario.

It's not weird and abstracted, and it's way more accessible than it looks. I could never get into those wargames with super complex rules and UI, but this one I picked up easily and am having more fun with it than anything else.

Pic related is my Barbarossa scenario I'm working through. Finally took Moscow in February 1944 (lol). I dun goofed in 1941 and made a huge push for Moscow and got most of my Army Group Center surrounded and destroyed and then I got pushed way back and had to rebuild, hold the fronts, and then resume the offensive.

Oh, well I actually created that name myself. It was a multiplayer game and we were picking silly names. And yeah, units are generally abstracted in that sense but different scenarios can change that, or you can rename them yourself. You can also develop different models of tanks. The general categories are light, medium, and heavy, and you can upgrade to II, III, IV, and V levels, but then you can also research sub-types like Panthers, Elefants, etc etc.

I'm not sure how often it goes on sale. I think I got it on sale a long time ago, but maybe from the Matrix site and then registered it on Steam? I don't really remember. I don't think it goes on sale too often on Steam though. But the price point is great for the hours I get out of it. I can play Alexander the Great scenarios, ancient Rome, Napoleonic, Civil War, WWI, modern, all depending on my mood.

I'm not sure if there are tactical WWI scenarios. I did a grand strategy WWI scenario once and it was a lot of fun, and challenging, as Germany.

Oh and if you want a more focused, historical game check out the Decisive Campaigns series. Same dev, same game engine, but with better artwork and way more detail. Focused on specific campaigns. The latest one, Barbarossa, is a cool roleplay/strategy hybrid. You have to make decisions along the way and manage different personalities of generals and make moral decisions. You have to balance Hitler's wishes with your general's wishes and the SS wishes, not to mention winning. Pretty cool concept. I haven't bought it yet but I will. I think this will be a huge feature in the future for wargames - hybrid roleplaying/strategy.

Gotcha. Operational is my favorite level. Not a big grand strategy guy. I LOVE logistics. This game has the best logistics of any game I've played, along with Unity of Command.

Models supply lines and fuel consumption. I played one game and totally didn't think about my fuel and my armored offensives ground to a halt and I got smashed - I learned my lesson.

I'm not sure what those scales were. Some can be really tiny, some can be global. Just depends on the scenario.

I have about 100 hours in now but it was really easy to pick up. Like I said, I never got into wargames because they were too complex, but I can handle this. The manual is very good and the UI is very good/intuitive.

The one big thing that can really trouble new players is stacking. In games it's always an issue: Civ IV had mega-army doom stacks, which Civ V "solved" by only allowing one unit per tile. Just an example.

At least in the base game (dunno if different scenarios change it), this does stacking by weight - each hex can "support" 100 weight. You can overstack to your heart's content (5000 weight if you want), but when you attack a hex and weigh over 100, you receive extra casualties. So, the ideal attack on a hex is from 5 different sides, with 20 weight each. But lots of noobs make units of 50 tanks (each 20 weight IIRC, so they'll attack from one direction with 1000 weight and then get mad that they lost a lot of tanks.

Hopefully that makes sense. Sorry, I kind of went off on a tangent. But that's just an example of probably the most complex combat element, which is simple once you understand it.

Oh, and you can create massive clusterfuck maps if you really want to fight a long, drawn out war like pic related.

Nam era play where the Redfor gets Inf witout vehicle support unless NVA is so fun. Especially if you just fucking ignore cap zones. Played some rounds where players have to take certain hilltops, or towns. If someone captures 2/3rds of the giant city they win. Usually fun with buddies.

Fuck vanilla game.

Sorry senpai, that was a long time ago, i dont think i did a replay of it anyways and i already uninstalled the game.

There was another time in which it was a conquest gamemode, we were winning the points HOWEVER the enemy was advancing.

We had to literally wait 2 minutes more to the clock to run out since we had more points than them, but we were on literally no fucking capzone with no air corridor in a fucking peninsula with all of our 3 guys units hunched together in a forest waiting for the time to run out while the enemy was spamming choppers and napalms to kill us all to win.

Shit was tense because they were getting closer, so was the clock.

At the end they won....... at 5 seconds left in the clock.


Picture it. 2 hurt infantry units in a fucking patch of wood getting overrun by enemy heavy armor and infantry and air assets and if they lasted 5 seconds longer we would win the game.

Shit was cash. Reading this thread makes me want to get EE just to experience some more balanced gamemode.

You want me to be completely honest?

That was one of the most amazing matches I ever had.

It was a 4v4 on some large map. The one with a sausage sector in the middle of the map with a bridge, two towns in each of the ends, a river across the whole map cutting it horizontally, and several sectors along it. I don't remember the map's name.

That fellow started the game with a heli rush when everyone else was advocating for a normal game. The heli rush failed badly, and right off the bat there was a difference of +1200 points, and the middle belonged to Blufor. And Blufor has also dominated the right, pushing fowards.

The time marker says there's still 40 minutes left of battle. What this retard does is he convinces everyone to start buying mi24s and the like to start an heli rush. It goes that, for 20 minutes, we do not deploy a single ground unit, only helicopters, and stack them up.

With 20 minutes left for the battle to end, a shit ton of MI24s, KAs, MI28s, all sorts of planes and MI8 transporting different types of infantry, and two mi4 cvs, start thrusting towards BLUFOR spawn.

With over 70% of casualities the helicopters make it to their deployment, one of the CVs was shut in the middle of the air, and the other was taking small arms fire, being stunned by a light riflemen from a NORAD player. Almost destroyed, the CV lands safely after MI8s blow the fuck out of light riflemen, and now BLUFOR sees itself surrounded along the river.

With no deployment zone, NATO surrenders.

I played some Vietnam-themed games with friends, we used to get the infinite deck mod to have period accurate decks.
One round in particular where the US was swarmed bfrom every side and had to control an airport to be able to call planes. It was intense.

Too bad there aren't towed pieces in the game.

It annoys the hell outta me when they talk about the golden age of RTS when one of the most important parts of that age was mods literally pushing the engine as far as it goes. I mean some of the biggest pc games in the world now are based off old RTS mods for warcraft etc.
