You sound very poor at gambling. All the things at play lean more towards the AR-baby or Glock-sucker who actually take care of their rifle/handguns and get in range time fairly frequently. Again- skill is skill but a dirty, rusty, shaken-up G3 probably won't function as well as an semi-clean AR-15 and will probably cost the owner's life if something goes wrong.
If I wanted to spout feel-good messages about my bad decision making I would be making the same points as you- but I don't. I leaned from my mistakes and educated myself. Also one last fact:

I question the claim of 5.56 as being the deadliest cartridge ever fielded by a military. It's pretty good at what it does though.
It's true the ar15 was not intended for civilian sales, they wanted a military contract, but so did Mauser when they released the Gewehr 98. Nobody is bitching about bolt actions.
I've not been in the military (though many of my friends and family were) so take this with a grain of salt. Full auto in a service rifle is about useless. There may be a small window of circumstances where it might be nice but it does not make an m16 more combat effective than an ar15 by any real noticeable margin.
It might seem like he's painting an ugly picture of the ar15, by saying it's a deadly weapon, but that's the truth. It's effective as fuck. That's why it's popular, that's why I own one, that's why most other people own one, and we as gun owners need to stop fooling ourselves that our guns are only for putting holes in paper and banging steel plates.
