D-21 reconnaissance drone. When the A-12/SR-71 were under development, AA missiles were starting to get pretty good. Deep penetration over Soviet airspace with manned aircraft was judged to become too risky. So an unmanned drone with camera was developed.
During initial testing, an M-21 (A-21 modded as launch platform) was lost with one fatality. The D-21 was then redesigned to launch from a B-52 at lower speeds with a rocket booster to get it up to speed to light its engine.

Things sure aren't getting any easier for Russians to deal with. Within 5 to 10 years, Russians will have to deal with drones, decoys, jamming, swarms, pgm, and stealth all at once. A huge clusterfuck in the sky. The only thing Russians have is MUH L-BAND.
